The mind is a very interesting phenomena, it is something that we know exists in a basic sense, but there are just some things that we cannot know about the mind, for example, we know that the mind is directly tied to the brain, but we do not know whether the brain is a spiritual entity that controls the brain, or if the brain creates what we call the mind, which embodies our conscience. this, in a basic sense is a start to the problem to be discussed, the mind-body problem is the challenge of explaining how mental states such as thoughts and other mental processes relate to the physical worlds events states and processes, since the body and mind operate on two completely different planes; the physical and non-physical. That being said, all theories are met with a considerable amount of scrutiny, no matter how logical or valid it may seem. According to Levin(2013), functionalism is defined as;”…the doctrine that what makes something a thought, desire, pain (or any other type of mental state) depends not on its internal constitution, but solely on its function, or the role it plays, in the cognitive system of which it is a part. More precisely, functionalist theories take the identity of a mental state to be determined by its causal relations to sensory stimulations, other mental states, and behavior.” In other words, this theory explains the brain as a computer that is advanced enough to generate consciousness. Therefore, the mind is basically a generated simulation constructed by the brain
