Many kids in America today grow up playing many different sports. Two of America’s best sports are football and baseball. These two sports are both fun and romantic, in their own little way, making them both a great American pastime. Some have come to wonder which sport has the title of being America’s pastime. For many years baseball has dominated as America’s past time but times have changed, and people are starting to think that football should own the title of being America’s pastime.

A baseball field is in the shape of a diamond, where as a football field is in the shape of a gigantic rectangle. A football field is 100 yards long and 52 yards wide. Baseball fields vary in size, from each level to each different ball team. Located on a baseball field are four bases, a pitcher’s mound, dirt infield, dugouts, and an outfield wall. In football, there is chalk lines every five yards for one hundred yards. Hash and yard number marks, down and distance indicators. Also on a football field the entire field consist of turf or grass containing no dirt. On football fields there are no dugouts for the players to stand in. Instead, the players stand on the sidelines and sit down on bleachers. Both field however have referees on the field during the games, foul or out of bound lines, and both can have fields consisting of turf. Football and baseball are both large scale events in American sports today. This results in a high number of fan attendance at each of the sports games. In order to keep up with the number of fans, baseball and football organizations build humongous, expensive, and beautiful stadiums. Both football and baseball stadiums are built to resemble the Greek coliseums. The massive stadiums are designed this way in order to hold a large number of fans. In football, there are eleven players on the field for the offensive side, and eleven players on the defensive side. Also in football, many players only play offense or defense. This makes for bigger rosters in football, as you have about twenty players for offense and twenty players for defense. On the other hand, the number of players that can be on the baseball field at one time is thirteen. This would result in players at each defensive position, along with their being a runner on every base, and a batter at the plate ready to hit. Baseball teams have nine players on the field playing defense; these same players play offense as well. Baseball rosters are a lot smaller compared to football rosters. A baseball team usually consist of twenty players total in the dugout and about ten pitchers in the bullpen. Although there are ten pitchers in the bullpen, only about three to four of them will play in one particular game. In football there is only high school, college, arena, Canadian, and the National Football League. With the NFL being the highest level. Baseball consist of high school, college, and Major League Baseball. In Major League Baseball, there are three different levels of minor league. The lowest level is single A, then double A, and triple A. The highest level would be the major leagues. Each baseball organization has one team per level,
A person that would like to play professional ball will choose baseball because there is a professional big league, such as the St. Louis Cardinals, but in softball that opportunity is not available. Baseball is played on more levels than softball. It is played on the professional, international, Olympic, college, high school, and little league levels. If a player is fortunate enough to make it to the professional level, he can make millions of dollars.
Baseball has been of the longest living sports in our world today. The game started with the idea of a stick and ball and now has become one of the most complex sports known in our society. Several rules and regulations have been added to help enhance the game for everyone. Although baseball has endured several issues during its history and development of the game the game has still been a success throughout the world.

Adrenaline rushed through the players’ veins as the crowd cheering echoed from the bleachers to the outfield. American Football is a huge spectator sport where offensive and defensive players will use teamwork and perseverance to try and score more points than their opponent. Football is highly respected in America, where boys will try and pursue the dream of playing in the NFL (National Football Association) someday; but if you look at an average neighborhood, you will find that kids and adults of all ages love to go out and throw around the pigskin. (Lerner and Lerner 275). One thing Americans will take pride in is the college and NFL football teams they root for. People sit down with a beer and talk hours upon hours of football and two individuals can get in a heated discussion in the local sports store of whose sports team is better. Surprisingly enough, one will find the most passionate football players at the high school level. Most boys will start their football career as a young child in football programs such as Pop Warner to get a foothold and to get those involved in teamwork and friendships. These programs are usually the start to someone falling in love with the sport and making it a career choice eight years later. Football is one of America’s favorite sports. When fall season comes around, people across America are placing bets, finding out where that new sports bar is, and buying wide screen T.V’s to watch NFL on Sundays. Baseball, America’s pastime, is embedded in the fabric of society. The players and teams have come and gone, but the thing that remains constant is baseball’s ability to unite people as well as families. My own personal experience of this came right after September 11th, 2001. Following the tragedy that was 9/11, the country needed something to help everyone return to normalcy. In our moment of weakness and uncertainty, baseball helped calm my nerves. Fifty three thousand three hundred and twelve brothers stood up in unison and took back their lives. The electricity of that game, the sense of regularity in my life, and the knowledge that millions of people were finding comfort together with me during such a hard time, helped me feel a sense of closure that the worst was behind us.

For example, have you ever seen Addison Russell, the Chicago Cubs shortstop, lay out for a ground ball and capture it, then bounce up from the ground and make a ridiculous throw to first? Making a play like that takes athleticism from another world, Addison needed to possess the hand eye coordination to snag the ball while parallel to the turf and he had to get up and make an acrobatic throw to first. Baseball has for a long time been a staple in the American sporting culture as baseball and America have grown up together. Exploring the different ages and stages of American society, reveals how baseball has served as both a public reflection of, and vehicle for, the evolution of American culture and society. Many American ways including our landscapes, traditional songs, and pastimes all bear the mark of a game that continues to be identified with America's morals and aspirations. In this paper I will be addressing the long residuals of baseball as it specifically relates to the emergence of the American nation and its principles of nationalism. This is a particularly important issue because baseball seems to be a perfect representative system having many comparative analogies to the larger system of development, America. Since the sport first emerged, baseball and America have shared the same values, responded to the same events, and struggled with the same social and economic issues. Baseball and football are very popular in America Sports today. Some people think that baseball is just a laid back sport and just boring then other people say football is better because it is more physical and harder and it's a man's game. But that is not true because it comes down to the mental and the physical part of the game baseball over rules all of that.
For most sports fans there is nothing like opening day and a baseball field. In recent years I have over heard several people say Baseball is not the National Pastime or National Game any longer. When I query these people the typical response is Football is our new National pastime/game. Frank Deford (Nov 7, 2012) a writer for Sports Illustrated said, "Baseball is what we used to be. Football is what we have become." I refuse to believe this based on my knowledge of both games. In this paper we will exam the facts and I would submit to you that Baseball is still the National Pastime/Game and it cannot be disputed.
Baseball is a very well known sport and often known as “America’s pastime” and softball is highly similar, but with a few key differences. Many people just assume that the sport of baseball is more difficult than softball, but don’t actually know the specific parts of each of the two. Also, if you’ve never played one or the other sport, you shouldn’t be assuming anything at all in the first place. Although many assume one may be harder than the other, baseball and softball both have particular factors which make them both complex in their own way.

Football is a full contact sport that millions of fans watch every season even though it is not a worldwide sport yet. Baseball may be America’s past time but football is America’s obsession. It is played on a field but the athletes seem more like gladiators fighting for blood in the arena for the amusement of their fans.
