Social and cultural effects of the great depression in America (1929-1939)
For my research paper, I am going to focus on the social and cultural effects that the great depression had on America. I will cover how society in the late 1920’s through the 1930’s were impacted by the depression and how it the great depression affected their life forcing them to live a certain way due to the economical failure of America. In addition, I will cover the cultural impact it had on men and women. In terms of how men were breadwinners, when they lost their jobs and saw their wages decrease they felt like failures. Although, that was on one of the main causes. Another big cause I found was the banks failed too. Throughout the 1930s over “9,000 banks failed”. When I read that I took a step back and was astonished at that number. It wasn’t just a couple hundred, it was thousands failed. The reason was that banks would loan out money, that would be invested in a stock. That stock would crash leaving the lender coming back to the banks wanted to take out loans in which the lender (the banks) with no return, in addition to bank deposits were uninsured and thus as banks failed, people simply lost their savings. So as the market was declining everyone ran to the banks wanting to take out their savings and the bank simply had no money causing the economy to collapse. What if one day you went to the bank to take out your money and the banks looked at you and said “It’s gone”, how would your behavior change? Now imagine millions of Americans finding out that they had no savings, going home to their families not knowing where their next meal is coming from. I do want to bring the focus back to how America 's cultural and social behaviors changed, and shift away from what caused the depression. I’m not quite sure if adding the cause and effect of the depression will help my research paper or if I should mainly stick to these 2 topics. Although the culture of the American people changed heavily based on the banks collapsing, adding these details will give the reader more depth into how the great depression caused these issues in
The Savings and Loans Crisis of the 1980’s and early 90’s created the greatest banking collapse since the Great Depression in 1929. Over half the S & L’s failed, along with the FSLIC fund that was created to insure their deposits.

The Great Depression is a an era when the US economy was at its lowest. It is after the Roaring 20s. The depression was caused mainly because of the crash of the stock market in 1929 and the government’s failed attempts to help the people. Many people’s belongings are bought with credit so they lost all their money and most of their things when the bank system failed. Others lost their jobs and many men left their families because they felt ashamed that they can’t support their family. The social fabric of the Great Depression changed greatly from the previous era. The changes in the social, the political, and the economic part of the US are part of the change in the social fabric.

During the 1920’s, America was a prosperous nation going through the “Big Boom” and loving every second of it. However, this fortune didn’t last long, because with the 1930’s came a period of serious economic recession, a period called the Great Depression. By 1933, a quarter of the nation’s workers (about 40 million) were without jobs. The weekly income rate dropped from $24.76 per week in 1929 to $16.65 per week in 1933 (McElvaine, 8). After President Hoover failed to rectify the recession situation, Franklin D. Roosevelt began his term with the hopeful New Deal. In two installments, Roosevelt hoped to relieve short term suffering with the first, and redistribution of money amongst the poor with the second. Throughout these years of the depression, many Americans spoke their minds through pen and paper. Many criticized Hoover’s policies of the early Depression and praised the Roosevelts’ efforts. Each opinion about the causes and solutions of the Great Depression are based upon economic, racial and social standing in America.
In Daily Life in the United States, 1920-1939: Decades of Promise and Pain, author David E. Kyvig, creates historical account of the Great Depression, and the events leading up to it. Kyvig’s goal in writing this book was to show how Americans had to change their daily life in order to cope with the changing times. Kyvig utilizes historical evidence and inferences from these events and developments to strengthen his point. The book is organized chronologically, recounting events and their effects on American culture. Each chapter of the book tackles a various point in American history between 1920 and1939 and events are used to comment on American life at the time. While Kyvig does not exactly have a “thesis” per se, his main point is to examine American life under a microscope, seeing how people either reacted, or were forced to react due to a wide range of specific events or developments in history, be it Prohibition, the KKK, or women’s suffrage.

The public demanded deposits from the banks and as they were handing the cash over little did they know it was leading to less money in circulation. Companies closed down because of deflation and low demand while others laid off over half of their workers. As the unemployment levels increased, properties were repossessed and citizens started mortgaging their houses and selling everything just to get through the depression with their own home. The Varied Impact of the Great Depression on American People The experiences of Americans during the Great Depression varied greatly. For most, the Great Depression was a time of hardships and trials. The way that people were tried were different though, some languished in a collapsed economy, while others had to struggle to make a living in the remote regions of the country. The years berween 1929 and 1933 were trying years for people throughout the world.
The cause of this was the Stock Market crash in 1929. Many investors in the stock market panicked and sold all their stocks. The results of this include frightened Americans withdrawing all their savings, causing and hoarding it in their homes, many banks to shut down and less money to circulate in the economy. Although the economy had taken a dramatic blow, there was hope. A new program was administered by the government to help people suffering from the depression.
The Great Depression was the worst economic collapse in the history of the industrialized world that affected everyone from children to elders. The social values of consumerism and isolationism that impacted the way that average Americans behaved was a huge part of what caused the collapse of the global economy. Banks all around, especially the large ones, sought to support the market before it could crash down. As the stock prices crashed, banks struggled to keep their doors open (“Economic Causes and Impacts”). Unfortunately, some banks were unsuccessful. Customers wanted their money out from their savings account before it was gone and out of reach, leaving banks insolvent (“Stock Market Crash of 1929”).
The Effect of the Great Depression on National and Individual Morale The Great Depression of the 1930’s was an era of hopelessness and fear for many. Coming soon after the prosperous Coolidge era, the Depression affected a nation of people who had based their self esteem around their ability to work and provide well for their families (Clements, page 67 - 69). Individuals and families had to contend not only with an existence that pushed people close to suicide and starvation, but a total loss of self worth and the haunting memories of the cars, radios and relatively luxurious lives they would have led five years previously.
The Great Depression often seems very distant to people of the 21st century. This article is a good reminder of potential problems that may reoccur. The article showed in a very literal way the idea that a depression can bring a growing country to its knees. The overall ramifications of the event were never discussed in detail, but the historical significance is that people's lives were put on hold while they tried to struggle through an extremely difficult time.
The stock market crash of 1929 was the primary event that led to the collapse of stability in the nation and ultimately paved the road to the Great Depression. The crash was a wide range of causes that varied throughout the prosperous times of the 1920’s. There were consumers buying on margin, too much faith in businesses and government, and most felt there were large expansions in the stock market.
