Science Fiction is a type of literature that is based on future scientific or technological advantages. As we discussed in class, most Science Fiction stories consist of humans leaving Earth to travel in space. It is genre that is constantly changing overtime as scientists make more and more breakthroughs in space. There are many types of genres, but what makes Science Fiction stand out as its own genre? If literature represents our adapting culture, then it shows how Science Fiction has its own specific qualities: understanding of science, prediction of human behaviors, and it can produce a truth. As our understanding of science advances, so does the quality of information in Science Fiction stories. Although these stories cannot exist in the past, it can reenact myths from the past. Science Fiction teaches us about our own stories and our life in the future. For example, in the short story “Desertion” by Clifford D. Simak, Towser, the dog, is given a voice when he enters the planet. Do you ever wonder if your dogs are speaking to you? What if the other existing universes would allow us to speak with animals? It is a truth that is not known yet, but it makes civilization that much more complex. Besides “Desertion,” the short story “Swarm” by Bruce Sterling clenches on the idea that knowledge is not important. When you look toward the future, do you really think knowledge is going to save us from Earth blowing up? The truth in Science Fiction can be reflected in its knowledge; all stories provide a background of how harsh the environment is. Science Fiction truths prepare us for the future by giving us a second to think outside of technology world and realize what is about to come.
