In life and in literature, it is often true that fate is a hidden, but unavoidable force that leads to certain consequences in peoples lives. The theme of fate plays a crucial role in the lives of the main characters of the play, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet share a destiny that dooms them to tragic deaths immediately after the exchange of their precious love. Despite their resolute attempts to challenge their destiny, the principle of fate propels the lovers still succumb to the inexorable powers of fate. “Star-crossed” means both Romeo and Juliet were born under unlucky stars, and their lives will always be tainted with disappointment. They will see their happiness ruined with their own eyes. Since Romeo and Juliet have been born, fate, by which their lives have progressed on, has set their passage. Time is not in the hands of anyone, and fate uses that in her advantage. The prologue also tells us how the play is going to progress. The breaking point, at which fate is really seen is when Romeo reads the invitation letter, and decides to go to the ball to see Rosaline. Capulet makes the mistake of giving his invitation to a servant who cannot read, and that servant happens to ask a group that includes
Romeo to decipher it for him. Romeo mentions- “I’ll go along, no such sight to be shown, But to rejoice in splendor of mine own”. He only wanted to go to the ball in order to see Rosaline, but little did he know he would find his true love. At the ball, things progress quickly. [He is] not here. This is not Romeo. He’s some other where”. This shows the audience, that from the beginning of the play, Romeo has been lost in his own actions, and fate has brought him along. When he gets the news about Juliet’s death, which are destined for him to receive from Balthasar, neither then Friar John, he is devastated. Romeo says “I defy you, stars”. He wants to live his own life, this is why he rebels against his own fate. He has been lost from the beginning of the play, and now is when he denies his fate, and wants to find his true self.
However, fate has been controlling his life for so long now, it brings him to Juliet’s tomb before Juliet wakes up. Romeo kills himself with Juliet beside him. When Juliet wakes up, she is devastated, because of what happened since she was asleep. She kills herself, because Romeo and Juliet were destined to be together, not on land, but in heaven. When Romeo and Juliet’s parents find out that Romeo and Juliet are dead, and were married in secret, they are devastated that they could not prevent what happened. Fate is the force that brings Romeo and Juliet together, then takes them apart, in order to heal
