The roles of women was an issue in medieval times and in The Canterbury Tales. In A Knight 's Tale, the women were portrayed as objects. To men they didn 't mean much. Women for them were there to help only when needed and didn 't hold an important role in society. Women were treated differently and had not much of importance. In the movie, A Knight 's Tale, women were treated very poorly. Men were held to higher standards. The men would do mostly everything that was important or popular. Women were held back behind men doing nothing but being support to the men. You could tell the respect held for the men over women. For example when Jocelyn and William argued in the church, the priest came to yell at them but only told Jocelyn to stop. He said no word to William even though he was apart of it. Jocelyn was blamed for having such commotion even though William was very much part of the scene. The priest not once said anything to him but did say it all to her. They didn 't think so much about the role of the women but seen only as an object men had. William and Adhemar show it when they fight for her. Adhemar speaks of her as a prized possession. Popular culture depicts Medieval chivalry as a glamorous and high time for women, with knights bending their knees in worship to them in Pre-Raphaelite paintings, and the fairness and virtue of women being celebrated in literature. Chivalry is often understood as the elevation of the lady fair, with men taking upon themselves the task of protecting and defending women. In fact, though, this was not an elevation of women but a limitation of their freedom and an undermining even of their intelligence and strength of will. Medieval chivalry, in essence, subordinated women to men while claiming to elevate women. In Lanval and Laustic, women are shown to have a subordinate status to men in three ways: being painted as temptresses, being subject to protection from men, and being subservient to orders from men.
Chaucer's Canterbury Tales are filled with many entertaining tales from a variety of characters of different social classes and background. The first two tales told, by the knight and the miller, articulate very different perspectives of medieval life. Primarily, The tales of both the knight and the miller bring strikingly different views on the idea of female agency, and as we will discover, Chaucer himself leaves hints that he supports the more involved, independent Alison, over the paper-thin character of Emily.
How are women in the story portrayed throughout the book as the journey goes on? In the story King Arthur and the Knights of his Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green, the once and future king makes his knights take on unthinkable quests on the expedition. Women are portrayed as devious, evil, and untrustworthy.
Women, in general, were expected to be able to run their homes, taking care of their spouses and children in whatever form was needed at the time. They were looked down on as uneducated without the ability to understand the more intricate knowledge of politics and the running of businesses of any kind. They had no rights except for what they received from the graciousness of their husbands. Their opinions did not matter, in the long run and they were treated as inferior, expected to stay in their place unquestioning and unassuming.
From the Classical age through the medieval age, women were greatly disrespected. They did not have any say in anything and were not appreciated. In Classical texts such as The Odyssey, the women were treated as if they were animals. They did not have the respect of others and some were thought of as whores. In the stories of Erec and Enide, Lancelot, and Perceval, we see a dramatic change in this, due to the system of government that Arthur entails giving them the freedom and rights they deserved. The new man to woman relationship brought about in these stories is very different then the past stories we have read from the classical age. This system gave great honor and respect to women, which became part of the chivalric code that was followed by the knights and royalty of that time. The courtly relationship between man and woman is the theme created throughout the stories in the Arthurian Romances. The ideas of courtly love and chivalry are summarized in these stories. We see many instances where knights go out of their way to please their woman. Once a knight chooses his woman, she thought of as his chattel, or property. He can do what he pleases with her and she must listen to him or possibly be killed. He respects and loves her as long as she is loyal and faithful to him. If someone were to interfere in his or her relationship, they would fight ‘til death or until someone begs for mercy.
But, let’s focus more towards the gender equality which occurs nowadays. Gender equality plays a big gap in terms of the role of women in the Elizabethan era and the present days. Furthermore, it is an important role of every woman since they gain their justice for having a job or profession they liked or wanted, they are respected by their loving husbands, and they could speak courageously and bravely since they had their freedom; the right to speak up which was not usual or present in the Elizabethan era. Women played a huge role in both the Gawain and Arthur stories by contributing to interesting plot twists. In most of the stories, women were very sneaky, and tricked many men into doing many things or betraying them. The women in these stories can be related to characters from the Bible. Sometimes women in the stories could be helpful, but many just wanted to seek revenge. Some women may have seemed nice toward the beginning of the stories, but all of them betrayed or sought revenge on men in many of the stories. Men were the dominant figures in the Middle Ages, but women seemed to hold all the power in the stories.
Women only experienced being housewives. They were never able to be in a male’s position because society didn’t think they were strong enough. Female authors wrote from their own perspective. I would imagine them writing about the power they wished to have. They wished to have characteristics that are similar to a man. They didn’t want to be stereotyped by society. Female Critics attempted to change these stereotypes by writing about them. Male authors also wrote from their perspective. I think they would write about how much power they have. Some didn’t think women needed more power. Then, Shakespeare came along and wrote the complete opposite of what society thought. He changed the way society thought about them.
Around the 1920s, gender roles depended on what city you were located in at the time, it be Chicago or New York aka the big apple. While women in Chicago were aspiring to become actresses, make the papers, take over media, sell products with their name on it, and perform plays on stage...women in New York were simply living to get played by men with money and power, they had almost no ambition or dreams. Both women in both worlds portray how gender roles were taking a toll on society, for the good of women or for the worse.
Woman in “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” compared to the women in Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight shows a progress or a power shift between men and women. When the knight sees the old lady and asks her for her help, she’s the only one who has that power to help save him. Now in terms of power, the old lady and the Wife differ in how they show their power. For example, The Wife in the prologue, she talks about her having five husbands and is looking for the sixth one and how her husband who “shal be bothe my dettour and my thral / And have his tribulacion withal / Upon his flesh whil that I am his wif.” (shall be both my debtor and my slave / And bear his tribulation to the grave / Upon his flesh, as long as I’m his wife) (The Wife of Bath’s Prologue 161-163) and even how she “have the
Society at this time was dominated by men, making women live extremely challenging and limited lives. The position and status of a woman ultimately depended on that of her husband. She was not given many rights unless it was allowed by her husband. Women had to withstand arranged marriages and there were times they encountered abuse from their spouse. In reality, this was just the custom of the culture, and as seen throughout the piece women are addressed with respect and praise on many occasions. Women that received isolation and opposition were those that stood on their own without men to do the “dirty work” of violence. With regards to this, one can assume that women of this time period were seen to hold purity, delicacy, and compassion. In serving men and remaining home, men protected women from the inhumanity in war and loss of beauty in grace. This could all be seen rather than women having the mere role of insignificant slaves. In the Old English tale of Beowulf, the customary position of women in society is in respectfully serving men.
Sir Gawain and The Green Knight is an example of medieval misogyny. Throughout Medieval literature, specifically Arthurian legends like Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the female characters, Guinevere, the Lady, and Morgan leFay are not portrayed as individuals but social constructs of what a woman should be. Guinevere plays a passive woman, a mere token of Arthur. The Lady is also a tool, but has an added role of temptress and adulteress. Morgan leFay is the ultimate conniving, manipulating, woman. While the three women in this legend have a much more active role than in earlier texts, this role is not a positive one; they are not individuals but are symbols of how men of this time perceive women as passive tokens, adulteresses, and manipulators.
