Rock and Roll is a genre that originated in the United States in the 1950s. It is said to have developed “from African-American musical styles such as gospel, jazz, boogie woogie, and rhythm and blues, with country” (Wikipedia). Just like jazz and rhythm and blues, rock and roll came from the southern United States. In 1951 the song “Sixty Minute Man” was said to be the first rock and roll song ever recorded. Rock and roll has had a huge impact on many of the issues that arose between the 1950 and 1970s. A reason that rock and roll became so popular among people in 1950 was because of the appealing and capturing rhythm of the songs. It is said that “the blues gave birth to a baby and named it rock and roll.” People generally danced to the blues because it had such a rhythm that if you did not dance it would feel almost sinful. People dancing or even foot-tapping became the norm with rock and roll. Another reason that the music became so popular is because of the plethora of artist that were willing to explore and experiment with rock and roll music. It is said that “with segregation being overturned in 1954 it gave some freedom for black and white artists to be sold in the same stores and be on the same record labels” (Stewart). When Rock arrived on the music charts in the 1950's, a merging of African-American and White music, it made a huge impact on society. As a general rule I am not heavily into music, but I was drawn to Rock for some inexplicable reason. It is just the music I like. This genre will be difficult to write about because the origin of Rock is unclear; there are traces of Rock's style back into the 19th Century.
