I. Introduction
In many parts of the world, poverty has been a continuing issue of concern. The weight of the concern affects both developed and developing states. By broad definition, poverty can be defined as the scarcity or deprivation of basic human needs, such as food, shelter, and clothing. There are various reasons why the world is experiencing such state. By knowing the reasons, we can analyze and determine what it needs to be done in order to address the issue and help alleviate the problems faced by these countries.
II. Poverty and Its Relevance
It is an issue due to its disruptive effects to society and the economy. If people do not have access to clean waters, adequate food, and permanent shelter, it could lead to poor sanitation, polluted environment, and escalated crime and violence.
There are many effects of poverty to people, such as unemployment, poor housing and living conditions, alcohol and substance abuse, lack or no education, and water and food related diseases (www.poverties.org, 2013). It can be a continuing cycle. Because of no education, there would be unemployment, poor housing conditions, diseases and substance abuse, etc. It could also be the other way, blaming the other effects for plagues the society has received from poverty.
Another effect of poverty is crime. Among impoverished areas, crime is one of the obvious effects of poverty due to high unemployment rates. Low incomes tend to prompt property-related crimes, such as burglary and illegal trafficking. In a broader sense, discrimination and social bias generate violent crimes. Lack of social cohesion and harmony can lead to riots and social unrest (www.poverties.org, 2013).
Although there is no direct proof that poverty effects the env...

Although poverty has minimized, it is still significant poverty which is characterized by a numerous amount of things. There are two types of poverty case and insular. “Case poverty is the farm family with the junk-filled yard and the dirty children playing in the bare dirt” (Galbraith 236)Case poverty is not irretraceable and usually caused if someone in the household experiences “ mental deficiency, bad health, inability to adapt to the discipline of industrial life, uncontrollable procreation, alcohol, some educational handicap unrelated to community shortcomings” (Galbraith 236).Case poverty is often blamed on the people for their shortcomings but on some levels can be to pinpoint one person's shortcomings that caused this poverty. Most modern poverty is insular and is caused by things people in this community cannot control. “The most important characteristic of insular poverty is forces, common to all members of the community, that restrain or prevent participation in economic life and increase rates of return.
The most obvious effect of poverty remains the material aspect. The family has no money, therefore they cannot afford a good of decent quality. They can only purchase subpar goods. The family gets cheated numerous times in money related incidents. The housing agent cheats them the most, as they must pay much more money then he told them they would. Not only do they get cheated on the insurance, but they pay much more for the house than the value of it. The bosses cheat them as well: “big businesses had become even bigger. Large corporations were making a great deal of money, and some owners and managers became very rich. However, most of the people working in business and industry were not getting rich” (Duyne). When problems arise with the house, the family can only buy cheap goods to fix them with. When the...
Poverty is not just an issue reserved for third world countries. Instead, poverty is a multifaceted issue that even the most developed nations must battle
One of the main causes of poverty is the lack of education. The U.S. education system denies students in poverty the opportunities and access it affords to most other students. Without good education, most people would encounter challenges in finding income-generating work, especially when there are few employment opportunities during an economic downturn.
The youth living in poverty are at greater risk of behavioral and emotional problems. Some behav-ioral problems may include impulsiveness, difficulty getting along with peers thus leading to social isola-tion, aggression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder. Some emotional problems may include feelings of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Poverty also creates stress and developmental
Growing up in poverty also leads to low levels of education, and most of poor children can't complete high school, and get their diploma. Children of poverty can't go to college, of their choice because their parents cannot afford it. They have not access to the best everything such as: the best of schools, teachers, and cloths. Children living in poverty are at risk for dropping out of school. Children are in high risk for becoming involved in crimes, so they could be locked up in jail. Many children may quit school because of a lack of transportation to school. All of those reasons could effects on children future, and their future families. They can't have a good job with high income to make money to support their families. Growing up in
The first specific way poverty impacts is health and eaten habits. Yes, rich people can be overweight, but they choose to be. Living in an urban low-come area, children’s family can’t afford packing healthy products. Some are on a budget, and can’t buy the bag of fruits and vegetables, when they can buy two boxes of Roman noodles for $5.00. Also, it is a lot cheaper going to Burger King buying a meal for the family, than cooking a full healthy meal. Another problem with this is some family’s work two jobs a day, and do not have time to cook, so they stop and buy food. Yes, again they can change their future eaten habits, but just like using drugs for ten years, the damage is already done.
Poverty is “the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions” (Merriam-Webster dictionary, 2015); in other words, struggling to provide a comfortable living style. It is the cause of family stress and many other problems, especially for the children. Millions of people around the world are struggling with poverty; families suffering to provide enough food seem to be growing in numbers. According to the United States Census Bureau, the poverty rate was highest in the 1960s and decreased greatly in the 1970s. However, it is now slowly starting to increase again. Recently released census data by the Bureau showed that one in five people are living in poverty (Census Bureau, 2014). Poverty is even
This nation has a problem: more of its citizens rely on the federal government for help than to support themselves with a full time job. Poverty has many negative effects on the people who suffer from it and on the economy. Everyone needs to be made aware of poverty and the many negative effects it has on people. There are things that could be done to help reduce the amount of people that are in poverty. Reducing poverty would decrease health risks, strengthen the middle class, and help the democracy.

Poverty is a major problem in the United States today. Social, economical, political, and cultural factors all contribute to poverty. Education and economic development are two major issues that will help prevent poverty. The United States Census Bureau defines poverty as an "economic condition in which people lack sufficient income to obtain basic needs for food, housing, clothing, health services and education." In other words, poverty is powerlessness, a lack of representation and freedom. Poverty is an issue that the world faces everyday.
Poverty is generally defined as a state of deprivation in well-being. The conventional perspective connects well-being basically to control over commodities, so the poor are individuals who do not have sufficient income or consumption to place them above some adequate bare minimum threshold (Lyman et al, 2004). Poverty is also tied to a particular type of consumption, for instance people may be considered health poor, house poor or food poor. The poverty dimensions can often be determined directly. For instance it can be measured by assessing malnutrition or levels of literacy (Alla...
What is poverty? Well, according to Webster's Third New International Dictionary, poverty is "lack of money or material possessions; poor." Two-thirds of the world's population fits this definition. I know that many times we think of being poor as not being able to buy the car we want or take the trip we can only dream about. However, being poor, living in poverty, hits a lot lower than that. For example, a resident of the country of Chad will only bring in $100 each year. Since many people can make more than that in one week, some in one day, can you imagine having the feed a family of five or six, or even a family of two, on only $100 a year? These are the conditions that exist in poverty-stricken countries.
Has anyone ever considered thinking about what the world is really going through? How many people don’t have the necessities in order to survive? If so, what are these people going through? Poverty is the state of one who lacks a standard or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions. Sometimes events occur that changes a person’s perspective on life. Poverty is one that can have a huge effect on not only one person, but also the people around him/her. Over half of the world is going through this tragedy and we, being the ones who created it, have the responsibility to end it.
Poverty is an issue dealt with throughout the world, but we are not all aware of its conditions. Poverty is a very serious problem around the world. Poverty is defined as the equality of poorness and impoverishment -- (the state of having little or no money and few or no material possessions). A question to ask ourselves is: “Should poverty be defined strictly in terms of monetary income, as opposed to some qualitative formula which takes into consideration styles of life as well as material possessions?” (Sheppard 13) Because there are so many different ways we can express the term poverty, maybe there should be a certain way we can determine poverty worldwide?
