One day I travelled in Italy, in there I met my new friend Patricia. She asked me if I had Facebook. This is my first time to heard Facebook, Since Facebook was blocked in China.I asked my friend what Facebook was. She told me that Facebook was a social media to contact with friends and make new friend. She asked me to create a new account in Facebook. I said:" Ok, I will create it right now." In Los Angeles Time, it reported a lawsuit filed in San Jose federal court in 2013 by two Facebook users Matthew Campbell and Michael Hurley about Facebook invasion of privacy. "it scanned the content of private messages sent between users for links to websites, which were then used for delivering targeted advertising. The complaint alleges that this violated the federal and state privacy laws by 'reading its users ' private Facebook messages without their consent."(Lien) While users send messages that include links to a third-party website, Facebook will scan the content of the message, through following the link and searching for information to profile the message-sender 's Web activity, then get profit by sharing the data with third parties such as advertisers, marketers, and other data aggregators. It is not a technological problem, it is a legal problem. In the Facebook & Your Privacy, the author point out that "In the U.S. online privacy laws are weaker than those of Europe and much of the world, so you have few federal rights to see and control most of the information that social networks collect about you."(Facebook & Your Privacy) I find numerous legal cases of Facebook privacy issue in the European Unions, however, I only find several cases in the US. Due to the privacy law is one of the fundamental law in the EU, Europeans pay attention on their privacy. On the other hand, the US absence of a Federal-Level privacy protection law. The courts need to recognize that in the technology age, people have both virtual privacy and physical privacy. People should be able to control their own data, regardless of where it is stored. People should be able to make decisions about the security and privacy of that data.
