Introduction
Oak Flats is a community in Australia that has a growing population in 2529. Due to an increasing population I started to wonder whether the waste in Oak Flats was in control and how much of this waste is recycled. My aim is to find out how much waste is produced form each household and how much is recycled in each household and depending on my results ways to reduce the amount of waste produced from each household. My investigations have led to their being a moderate amount of waste being produced in Oak Flats community although it’s low it could be lower and I will explain strategies in to how we can reduce the amount of waste and ways to show what can be recycled and what can’t as I surveyed a few houses and found about half didn’t have a lot of knowledge to what can be recycled or not and I will also mention ways to get this information out. If Oak Flats community takes my strategies of waste reduction in, this will help Australia’s waste problem dramatically.

Oak Flats can be found a bit lower than Wollongong part of Shellharbour City. It is positioned on the South Western shores of Lake Illawarra. It has a residential area of 6398 people (Census 2006). In it’s area there are four major schools and two of them are Oak Flats High School and Corpus Christi Catholic High School.

Conclusion
From all my statistics, Surveys and information that I have presented it is fair to say that Australia’s (Not only Oak Flats) waste management isn’t out of hand but can be reduced by the ideas I have presented as Worm Farms are easy to maintain, Cheap and it reduces a lot of waste being produced from each household. I believe for my first Idea of attack will need a lot of people to join in with my protest to slow down the production of products by the apple company but even though instead of putting peoples unwanted Electronics in the bin it could be put on eBay for other people to use. Other than that my other two plans of attack are easy to fulfill and will significantly reduce the amount of waste being produced. If these things are accomplished it will help Oak Flats be a better city for the people in it and surrounding it.
The Lowry Landfill Superfund Site is located in Arapahoe County, Colorado, approximately 2 miles east of Aurora. It consists of approximately 507 acres of waste disposal area and is operated by Waste Management of Colorado, Inc. The land surrounding the site consists of native prairie grass and a wetland located along a local creek. Sections around the site are zoned for agricultural use including cattle grazing and non-irrigated wheat farms. 1 The area is home to numerous endangered species including the bald eagle and peregrine falcon. Due to the large amounts of wastes disposed on the site between 1965 and 1980, it became extremely contaminated with a variety of inorganic and organic contaminants. From 1984 to 1993, the EPA oversaw remedial investigation and feasibility studies that were performed by all responsible parties. Since its listing as a superfund site in 1984, multiple remedial actions have been performed in order to rehabilitate the site. These include clay barrier walls around the site, a groundwater collection system, a soil cover for the main landfill, as well as a landfill gas collection system. Groundwater that is collected on the site is treated at an onsite water treatment facility. In 2007, construction began on an onsite gas to energy plant that utilizes the methane produced by the landfill site. The electricity produced by the plant is enough to power 3000 households. 1 Today, use of land and groundwater on and near the site is still restricted by the state of Colorado.1
Currently in Canada, the amount of waste generated by households is increasing. As Canadians continue to consume more, the amount of waste created as a result increases as well and between 2000 and 2004, household waste increased by 19% (Statistics Canada, 2008, para. 8). While this is appears to be a frightening statistic for landfills across Canada, recycling is actually increasing as well, and at a faster rate. Over the same time period (2000-2004), household recycling increased by 65% in Canada (Statistics Canada, 2008, para. 9). This is a positive sign as it is clear that Canada’s increase in trash is being offset by a much stronger effort with regards to recycling.
A new phenomenon happening in our city is the rebirth of many of our older and rundown areas. One of the best examples of this is the "Soulard" area of town, which now has an established nightlife as well as exquisite historical antique homes. Lafayette Square has also enjoyed the same type of success as Soulard. It is still in the middle of a high crime area, but is populated by upper-class people with beautiful homes with elaborate wrought iron fences and intricate security systems. This trend of fixing up old flats is spreading out from the areas of Soulard and Lafayette Square to neighboring communities at a rapid pace. The Compton Heights area is coming back with rebuilt old Victorian styled houses and private gated streets that contrast the French styled flats of Soulard. The Shaw and Tower Grove area are also following the lead of revitalization similar to these charming old neighborhoods.
Waste In The Bay, What Else Can I Say? Lay a hand for Jamaica Bay! Jamaica Bay, also known as Dead Horse Bay, has a toxic past filled with pollution and decaying carcasses (Roberts,2010). For over a decade, Jamaica Bay has been the main dumping site for waste treatment plants, oozing contaminants from a nearby landfill, runoff from the Belt Parkway and airplane fuel (Roberts,2010). To address this issue of pollution, finding the source of the contaminate would help reduce the continuous depletion of Jamaica Bay.

In 1986, a waste treaty between Canada and the U.S. was signed by American lawmakers concerning the Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Waste. Under the terms of this treaty, the EPA is to receive notification of these shipments, and then would have 30 days to consent or object to the shipment. Since 1986 Canada has shipped its garbage to Michigan to be dumped into landfills and the provisions of this treaty have never been enforced. But now is the time for them to be enforced and stop the importing of Canada's garbage.
On the first day of class, the characteristics that I wished to one day maybe live in were: a suburb that is friendly, has above average education, good road maintenance, and a lot of parks or preserves around it. Now that I have more knowledge on what to expect in the near future, I have a superior vision on what I would like my future neighborhood to be. After taking and contemplating on this class, personally, I would love to live in an inner ring suburb neighborhood that would prevent urban sprawl, including gentrification problems. The two neighborhoods that I chose to use for this assignment are vastly different. The main reason is because they are on opposite sides of the country. The first neighborhood that I visited is the one that I grew up in. This neighborhood is in Connecticut, on the East Coast, all the way across the country from the neighborhood that I currently live in here in West Hollywood. Most of my family lives in Connecticut and Massachusetts and I’m the only one who lives on the West Coast. A big difference is that the neighborhood in Connecticut has houses that are more spaced out, have larger lawns, and very many more trees. There are very few apartments there, unlike where I live now where my entire street is almost all apartment buildings.

MSW includes waste from public garbage cans and local dumpsters. Industrial Waste includes massive amounts of waste water that is contaminated with chemicals. Hazardous waste is the most dangerous as it presents a danger to human health and the environment. Solutions for waste disposal take time because people need to consider their lifestyle and limit the amount of waste they generate. As humanity develops new technology, the magnitude and severity of waste increases. When computers were developed, it widely was believed that the need for paper would be eliminated. On the contrary this was widely proven false and we are now utilizing more paper than ever. Canada is not an exception as the typical Canadian generates an average of three pounds of solid waste each day1. This alone shows what a careless species we have become- using and disposing materials without even considering the damage we are causing. With half a trillion tones of waste around the world, only 25% may be reused for a second or third time and less than 5% can be renewed limitlessly1. These facts are true only in developed countries. The solid wastes are produce not only by households; it’s contributed by hospitals and corporations. Hospitals throw away bandages, use needles and latex gloves, these items hospitals throw away daily all the time because they can’t be reuse for the safety of its patients. Corporations throw away a lot of waste as well such as papers that they use whether in writing or in projects.
