Commuting- 16 lines
Hustle and bustle
Jimmy and jam
Squishing and squeezing
All squashed aboard

Pushing and pulling
Jostle and jog
Shoving and skidding
Finding a seat

Huffing and puffing
Whistle and wail
Shouting and slamming
Departing now

Reading and snacking

The first poem I have chosen is called ‘Commuting’. It is a discovered poem (Anderson 2006 p.249) that started off based on the suggested prompt of ‘about a crowded place’ on the TMA 03 assessment page. I chose the train station and the train as it always perturbs me to see how people push and shove to get on the train with little regard for others.
As I was writing the poem I found that it was naturally picking up the sound of the train, the dactyl metre, dum da da (Anderson 2006 p.239) which helped to set the subject when reading it aloud. I had to jiggle the words and change some of the endings, such as changing jostling and jogging to jostle and jog so that the rhythm flowed better. The line pattern then became a syllabic shape of 5454. The first three verses were quite easy to compose, with a number of alliterative words of internal rhyme giving the impression of the rocking movement. I considered leaving the poem at three stanzas but after leaving it for a while, I went back and found that it didn’t feel finished so after many revisions I added the fourth
