The topic of the “Near Poor” throughout the United States has not only become extremely controversial in the last couple of decades, but has also become an epidemic for many young Americans. Due the cost of living increasing every year, it becomes harder and harder for individuals to keep up with expenses on their minimal salaries. People who are left in the category of the “near poor” are individuals who are either at the initial poverty line, or barely right above it. Usually, these individuals are one paycheck or one accidental incident away from being classified as “severely poor,” according to Social Problems by D. Eitzen, Kelly Smith, and Maxine Zinn (162). Families who make too much money, but not enough the pay for college are left with trying to figure out to pay for the remaining sum buy any means necessary. If systems like FAFSA and welfare aid would tailor their services to a larger cliental that that would have not been originally covered, more individuals who need a little more financial assistance would be more likely able to work their way out of residing in the “near poor.” The topic of who needs to take responsibility for the “near poor” is an extremely complicated one. Individuals with higher incomes and more financial freedom usually decide to blame the poor on an individual level for the reasons why they are stuck in poverty.
