I have come a long way in both my professional and personal life. I come from a very different cultured family. Both of my parents were born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia just like me. My family and I migrated to the United States about a decade ago seeking for a better way of life and more freedom of expression and opportunities. After we moved here it was challenging for us to adapt to U.S.’s culture because it’s very different from our culture. Located in the horn of Africa, Ethiopia is the tenth largest country in Africa. In recent years, the Ethiopian economy is currently the fastest growing economy in Africa and the third fastest growing economy in the world. Approximately 85 percent of the population lives in rural areas. The settled population is scattered, making delivery of health and social services difficult. …show more content…

The United States is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. The Unites States has traditionally been referred to as a "melting pot" welcoming people from many different countries, races, and religions, all hoping to find freedom, new opportunities, and a better way of life. Just as cultures from around the world have influenced American culture, today American culture influences the world. People migrate to the U.S. for many reasons for example some people are fleeing governments who aren 't ruling in the interest of their people or are treating different groups poorly for reasons of ethnicity, religion, or political opinion. One of the main reasons why my family and I migrated to this country was for a better educational opportunities. I’m currently a senior here at VCU going for my Bachelor’s degree in Health Science. Other cultural distinctions noticed are Ethiopians do not like to divulge their illness to others and physicians rarely tell a terminal patient that his or her illness is terminal because of the belief that sharing such devastating news would discourage the patient from the will to live. Instead the news is shared with loved ones so that they can provide emotional support (Mabsout, 2011). Lastly Ethiopia is a Black country and so there is no color distinction associated within the population. Thus an Ethiopian who migrates to America faces a variety of societal differences within the United States.
