All of my life, I have lived in Bradford Woods, Pennsylvania. As it is only a half-hour drive away, I also consider the city of Pittsburgh as part my home. Beyond that, I can also say that Pennsylvania, as a whole, is an area that I am from. There are many things that make this landscape unique; that let me know that it is “home.” These range from the shape of the land itself to the architecture of houses.
One way that I know when I am home is when I am in “my hills,” as I selfishly call them. These hills are part of the world’s oldest mountain ranges: the Appalachians. Though Pennsylvania reaches across the Piedmont, Blue Ridge, Ridge & Valley, and Great Valley, I am mostly familiar with the Plateuax on the western side of the mountains. They might not be much more than foothills, but it is significant enough for me to notice a vast flatness when traveling through Ohio.
Pennsylvania’s climate can also help make it identifiable. It falls into a humid continental region, resulting in it having both long, hot summers and freezing winters with snowfall. It also has a moderate amount of rainfall. “Although Pennsylvania lies entirely within the humid continental zone, its climate varies according to region and elevation” (“Pennsylvania - Climate”). Due to this, Pennsylvania actually has rather diverse weather patterns. Sometimes the weather can change dramatically within a week. For example, according to AccuWeather.com, the temperature high in State College on November 17th, 2013, was 58ºF, which then dropped to 23ºF as the high by November 24th. Being raised in the rural, rolling hills of West Virginia provides a childhood that is unforgettable. Being able to see the four different seasons and how they always change so beautifully into each other is beautiful. The hills are sprinkled with timbered forest of many types of trees, accompanied by different types of wild flowers and wild life. Passing through all of the small towns and hollers, you can still see the small farms that have been passed down from generation to generation within the families.

In order to define the music of Appalachia, one must first define the area in which the Appalachians encompass. This mountainous area extends 1500 miles and covers an area that extends from Maine to Georgia. There are eighteen states which make up the Appalachians. According to most Europeans, they consider the Appalachians to be only the southeastern region of the United Stated. However, the Appalachians are actually a combined combination of states that include all eighteen states. During the 1920’s these areas were considered 1“Back Country” areas.
The 205-thousand-square-mile Appalachian Mountain range, which spans from Eastern Canada to northern Alabama, boasts North America’s oldest mountains (formed approximately 400 million years ago), the highest peak of the eastern United States (Mount Mitchell), industrial production opportunities and leisurely recreation. The range includes the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Great Smoky mountains (NCSU, n.d.). A range of recreational activities such as fishing in freshwater streams, camping, biking the Blue Ridge Parkway, skiing and hiking are available in the region. One popular hiking location is the 2,184-mile Appalachian Natural Scenic Trail, which is the longest walking trail in the eastern United States (United States. National Park Service, 2014). Its rich natural capital offers a plethora of resources, allowing production to range from small-scale agricultural establishments to larger industrial outputs of metal and timber. Approximately 80 percent of land has been used for the coal and logging industry since the 90’s (Little, 1995). Though the commercial utilization of the mountains has boosted the economy of Appalachian towns and cities, it has also degraded the range aesthetically and commercially.
The drive to cross the Kentucky border had taken hours and hours of strenuous patience to finally arrive in another state. The view was by far country like as hints of cow manure could be smelled far from a distance. We drive through small towns, half the size of our hometown of Glen Ellyn had been the biggest town we've seen if not smaller. The scenery had overwhelmed us, as lumps of Earth from a great distance turned to perfectly molded hills, but as we got closer and closer to our destination the hills no longer were hills anymore, instead the hills had transformed to massive mountains of various sizes. These mountains surrounded our every view as if we had sunken into a great big deep hole of green pastures. Our path of direction was seen, as the trails of our road that had followed for numerous hours ended up winding up the mountainous mountains in a corkscrew dizzy-like matter.

There are fifty different states in the United States of America. Each one has its history and was important in forming our country; this includes Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania started out as just another region of land waiting to be discovered. Like the rest of America, this state has a tremendous amount of history behind it. From the Native Americans to Europeans to being one of the original thirteen colonies, how Pennsylvania helped to shape America is a story waiting to be told. Pennsylvania was more than just one state that contributed to the making of a nation; instead, it could have the “deciding factor” in the way America was shaped. As Professor Evan Haefeli has said, “perhaps Pennsylvania made the difference”. Pennsylvania and its government helped to create America through influences on government, participating in battles that were important to the nation, and aiding in lawmaking today.
This paper will first discuss the development of the steel industry. Next, it will examine steel, and in the impact it had on the transportation industry. Finally, it will discuss systematic management practices of this time and how they gave birth to the scientific approach that is still in use today.
College is a life altering experience. It is a place where you leave anything and everything you have ever known, to come to a place where nothing is familiar. The summer before your freshman year of college can be a nerve racking experience. You anxiously wait for the day when the mailman will bring you that envelope that holds your fate. Enclosed in this envelope is the name of your roommate. Your roommate can have the biggest influence on your freshmen year. They can turn into your best friend or your worst enemy. You anticipate the day when you actually get to meet the person you will be living with for the whole year. At Penn State there are no guarantees that you will have anything in common with your roommate at all, and that is a scary thing.
This place is meaningful to me because it is part of the county I loved, is part of the county where I grew up and is part of my childhood. This place is in the country in an old region named Appalachia, a small piece of the Appalachian Mountains, in a town named Pikeville.
