Summary: The novel Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life, by James Patterson follows a troublemaker named Rafe Kachadorian. When he gets to school although for him it’s more like prison and so far he’s not very fond of his new school. Rafe only has one friend, Leo but his full name is Leonardo the Silent. The only person Leo speaks to is Rafe because Leo is imjainary. Rafe’s first day of school is a difficult day a bully named Miller who chose for his victim of the year. However, it’s there was some good when he found a cute a girl who's name is Jeanne. On in the second day of school, they make the students come for an assembly to talk to the students about new and old rules. He called the cops but his mom didn't press any charges even though she went the hospital. Although she did break up with Bear Rafe and Georgina were both glad of the decision that her mom makes but the didn't say it. So then he has to have meeting with his mom and the principal he said that he was expelled from his school for the rest of the school year, although his English teacher was impressed by his art skills that she suggested an art school. His mom and Rafe took the suggestion and for the first time he’s excited for school. Rafe does not like school, and living at home is not the best. It's not great with Bear around since all he does is sleep and is a nuisance in his and his sister’s life. Despite all of his bad luck there was still a silver lining. Rafe got kicked out school where he wasn't learning or making any friends, and even got bullied by Miller. Most people would be upset that they were expelled from school, but Rafe sees this as an opportunity for change. One of his teacher’s thinks that Rafe would be better suited for an art school named Airbrook, “‘Airbrook could be a perfect environment for Rafe…. The school is a combination of visual arts and academics”’ (267). Rafe’s Mom is also able to find a silver lining when she realizes that Bear, who is her abusive boyfriend, is not a good person to be living with and is not the best influence in her life. * Duncan, Vinny, and Wayne are all friends working - or wasting time - the summer before senior year in high school. Duncan is the soul, Vinny the brains, and Wayne the muscle. At the end of the previous summer, Duncan tried to save a drowning girl and failed. Not being a hero has really affected his life, particularly his relationship with his girlfriend Kim. Also, he is now terrified of swimming, especially when the nightmares come back. Duncan's summer job is with the public transit lost and found. While trying to make the hours go faster, Duncan looks through the items, especially the books and golf clubs. One day he discovers an unmarked journal with no name, which depicts sadistic animal torture experiments, boasts of arson fires, and the planning for the serial killings of three women. Duncan decides to make amends for his failure last summer by tracking down the owner of the journal by using clues left hidden in the diary. After talking with his friend Vinny, Duncan decides to turn the journal over to the police, but they do not take him seriously, so he decides to get help from Vinny, do some research at the local library, and find out where the killer works and lives so they can prove to the police the diary is for real. But in the process when Duncan finds the house of the serial killer, he decides to take a look in it but unfortunately at that very time the serial killer appears and chases Duncan to the subway station. They get into fight there and they both fell on the subway tracks in the station where they get hit by the train. Duncan luckily survives but the serial killer dies.
Much of the book has one startling development after another to the shock of the characters. One of the problems Cal was facing is that he doesn't have the power to help someone that's going through something. And Cal gets angry because "Going through high school, there was always a surprise about someone or something unexpected floating around in the social circles. I believe this is relatable to the average reader in that they no doubt have heard horrible rumors about their classmates and wondered who to talk to or how to solve the problem.
All of the characters have loose ties to one another, but where all there paths seem to intertwine most is in their relationship with Singer, the deaf mute. The other four main characters all begin to confide in singer early in the story, and believe that he is the only one that truly understands them. Singer is a very kind person, and is always there for his new found friends. However, what Singer really longs for is his former companion, Antonapoulos. Antonapoulos means the world to Singer, but they are separated when Antonapoulos is sent to live in an asylum. Antonapoulos is a very crude character in this book. When approached by Arnold Friend at first, she was skeptical but was still charmed by him. As she began to feel uneasy, Connie could have used her intuition to realize that he was trouble. Once she had been engaged by Arnold, her life was over. The influences on Connie and her lack of instilled reasoning led to her down fall. Her family’s fragmented nature was echoed in her actions; consequently, she was unable to communicate with her parents, and she was never was able to learn anything of significance. She felt abandoned and rejected, because no one took the initiative to teach her how to make good decisions. Connie was unable to mature until she was faced with death and self sacrifice. In the end, her situation made it difficult for her to think and reason beyond the position she was in. By not being able apply insight, she fell into Arnold Friends lure. Cara is the most well-rounded character, "perfect" in every sense of word. She is expected to stand out academically, athletically and in extracurricular activities with the aim to be accepted to Stanford. It is impossible to please her mother, her father is never home and her twin brother, Connor, is a patient at a psychiatric hospital for having attempted suicide. She does not feel close to any of her friends, and she is not in love with her boyfriend, Sean; she is only with him because he is convenient. Furthermore, throughout the novel, Cara has to accept her sexuality once she realizes she is not "straight". The pressure to admit this to herself is immense - because the label does not fit under "perfect". She feels like she cannot confide in anyone. She is unable to discuss this issue with her boyfriend or her parents. Sean finds out, and Cara is becomes a victim of cyber-bullying. When she finally comes out to herself and to her parents, Cara's brother succeeds in another suicide attempt. Just as Cara's life had been coming together, the end of the novel allows it to fall apart again.
The main character in this story is Cassie Logan. She and her three brothers go through an extremely tough time in this story. They go through everything from racist driven petty things to the death of a friend. Cassie's age contributes a lot to this story. Since Cassie is about 10 years old she doesn't fully understand everything that happens and why they happen. This book is written in first person so the reader knows her thoughts and feelings, but not everyone else's. This provides a better grasp on Cassie's inner conflicts.

Junior sometimes had to go to bed hungry, but that wasn’t the worst thing about being in poverty. He made a diary entry stating, “Poverty= empty refrigerator+empty stomach. And sure sometimes my family misses a meal…and hey, in a weird way, being hungry makes food taste better (8).” This really puts the diary reader in his shoes about how many times he had to go without food and starve while trying to go to sleep, simply because his family couldn’t afford it. But to Junior, being hungry wasn’t necessarily that bad. What he felt was the worst thing about his poverty was that there was no money to save his beloved animal Oscar. Oscar became really ill and Junior wanted to take the animal to the doctor, but the family couldn’t afford it. When it came down to it, his father had to put the dog out of misery, and decided to shoot him. Visualizing someone having to shoot your best animal friend is heart wrenching. Most people have been in Juniors shoes where they have a sick animal, however they never imagine having to shoot it. While talking with his teacher, Mr. P, Arnold is told that he needs to go wherever there is hope. “You have to take your hope and go somewhere where other people have hope.” (Alexie 43) However, Mr. P wasn’t the only one helping Arnold. After switching from Wellpinit to Reardan, Arnold picks up some unlikely friends: Roger and Penelope. Each of them teach him something, and even keep his secret of being poor after he admits he can’t pay for going out to eat after a school dance he couldn’t even afford. “He’s not going to tell anybody. Roger likes you.” (Alexie 127) Arnold recognizes the value of these people helping him through the struggles of being the poor kid in a school dominated by students from well off families. Although he may continue to be held down by poverty, Arnold discovers that being vulnerable to friends can sometimes lead to unexpected support and people you can rely on. The Creature learns to read, speak, and write while living in the hovel attached to the De Lacey home. After many months, he decides it is time to meet M. De Lacey and try to form a relationship with him. The conversation is going well until Felix, Safie, and Agatha return home and quickly fled, but not before Felix attacked the Creature with a stick. The Creature realizes he could easily tear Felix apart, but refrains and is saddened by the thought that the De Lacey’s would not accept him. Through his grief, the Creature becomes enraged and begins his descent from benevolence.
