The Mind: A Truly Enchanting Thing The mind is so complex; it is hard to describe it in words in general. The mind consists of many things; wants, wishes, philosophy, and everything a person says, does, or thinks. The mind is described from intellect and intuition to focus, each commenting on aspects of the mind. However, Marianne Moore’s use of the word “enchanting” in the poem “The Mind is an Enchanting Thing” is the more effective and correct way to describe the mind. In Merriam-Webster, enchanting is defined as charming with synonyms like charismatic and appealing. This definition is what the mind embodies in its many aspects. Domenico Scarlatti was an Italian composer from the 17th century while Walter Gieseking was a German pianist from the early 20th century. In stanza 1 line 6 Moore writes, “Like Gieseking playing Scarlatti”. In putting these two together, she is putting together two amazing minds, creating a type of musical magic. Elizabeth H. Davis agrees vocalizing,”Moore quotes Yeats: ‘The poet binds with a spell his own mind when he would enchant the minds of others,’ and then comments herself: ‘for [Yeats] this enchantment has resulted in poetry that is music”. This stanza displays how creative the mind is and how much it is able to learn and learn well. These composers and pianist were able to learn how to play piano or write music and continue to remember it. “It [the mind] is closer to the center of experience, alive to the changes of an unconscious voice” (Costello 141). People are all given this ability from the mind and must choose whether they want to use it or not. In Moore’s “The Mind is an Enchanting Thing”, she introduces the idea of the mind’s multifaceted nature and definition through comparison of the mind. This is portrayed through the mind’s knowledge through learned and nature knowledge, the mind’s power through instinct and conscious, and the mind’s ability to bring awe through bird imagery and Herod’s oath.
