The Relationship Between Man and Nature
In this piece of coursework, I'm going to discover the relation ship
between man and nature, using two poets' works.
The poets I am studying are Robert Frost and R. S. Thomas. The works I
have chosen by Robert Frost are Mending Wall, Two Look At Two, After
Apple-Picking, and Mowing. I will study Mowing and Mending Wall in
more detail.
The works I have chosen to study by R. S. Thomas are Lore, Farm Child,
The Evacuee, and Cynddlan On A Tractor. I will be studying Lore and
The Evacuee in more detail.
Mowing - Robert Frost.
This poem is, as the title suggests, about mowing. It's one man out in
the fields mowing with his scythe and his imagination running away
with him, making him think that his scythe was whispering.
"What was it it whispered? I know not my self.
…The silence, which was why it whispered and did not speak." It's
silent in the fields, only a bird or two, maybe, to keep him company.
It's so silent, his mind makes him think that there is something else
there; he's basically going mad from the silence.
He personifies the scythe, saying that it 'whispered'. You and I both
know that that scythe, that any scythe, is an inanimate object, it
can't talk. His imagination runs away with him.
The language used in this poem is rather more formal than you would
hear in normal language. Could you imagine saying, 'what was it
he/she/it/they whispered? I know not myself.'? You would think, if
anyone said that now, that they were mad. You don't hear people saying
things like that, except in Shakespeare. Which is probably where Mr.
Frost got a lot of his ideas from, as it sounds like the kind of thing
that Shakespeare would say.
The ideas are very fanciful, a scythe whispering? Not an everyday
topic, is it? He is very imaginative, and can be compared to William
Wordsworth. Wordsworth also had very fanciful and imaginative ideas.
...things in life are not money, fame, or even basketball, but really finding out who you are meant to be in life and following your heart. Toward the end of the film, Jamal’s full potential is seen in a public reading performed by the recluse himself. William leaves his apartment and saves Jamal’s academic integrity.
Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau was very close author who wrote towards same points by criticizing the corrupted government because people were treated very badly and they were not given individual rights. They were good author who brought people together and made them understand about the system of the Transcendentalist movement in America. The governor and government itself was very poor to control the people and society due to corrupted leaders and government. Due to economic progress and poor system of government Emerson started criticizing government indirectly and wrote the poem about nature and society because maximum people could not enjoy the same facilities and freedom. But his intension was very clear and he wants to make people aware of what is happening around them. He also wants people to appreciate everything nature provides and not take it for granted. He was very disheartened by the anti-businessman for growth of economic progress and trading activities which has spoiled huge area of nature in the society. He explained that “most adults have lost the ability to see the world in this way. In order to experience awe in the presence of nature, we need to approach it with a balance between our inner and our outer senses. Nature so approached is a part of man, and even when bleak and stormy is capable of elevating his mood. All aspects of nature correspond to some state of mind”. That means he indirectly exclaimed that most of the leaders of society were included in the practices of such activities. On the other hand, Henry David Thoreau is another writer aiming to another target writing against the system of government. “Emerson wants his readers to know that tradition is not everything and society only h...
“Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words,” Robert Frost once said. As is made fairly obvious by this quote, Frost was an adroit thinker. It seems like he spent much of his life thinking about the little things. He often pondered the meaning and symbolism of things he found in nature. Many readers find Robert Frost’s poems to be straightforward, yet his work contains deeper layers of complexity beneath the surface. His poems are not what they seem to be at first glance. These deeper layers of complexity can be clearly seen in his poems “The Road Not Taken”, “Fire and Ice”, and “Birches”.
Robert Frost was an American poet who was known for his vivid images of nature and farm life in his work. He was highly regarded as one of the most influential and popular American poets of the twentieth century. He has received various awards such as the Congressional Gold Medal and the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, which he won four times. Many critics over the years have analyzed Frost’s poetry, all of them eager to jump into the woods of complexity that is Robert Frost.
“A philosophical and literary movement, centered in concord and Boston , which was prominent in the intellectual and cultural life of New England from 1836 until just before the civil war”(A handbook of literary terms, page 318).
Erin Gruwell is horrified when she realized what going on and makes a lesson about its similarity to the propaganda of the Nazis. This scene experience the racism and violence due to racial profiling caused by the human society. This relates to the conflict theory because there are some tension and struggle between the students in the Gruwell’s class. The students struggle to get along because of their race, ethnic, etc. and after the incident on the racist image of Jamal, Ms. Gruwell sends a message to her classroom that their lives are not that bad as she does it harshly by related it to the lives of the Jews in the holocaust. In one of the class discussion we had this semester, we talk about the stereotypes, ethnicity, racial profiling etc. and how it label specific groups and how it used today. Back to the scene where the image of Jamal, all the different type of students except the students that associated with the ethnic or race thought it was funny. This scene is an example of stereotype as it shows Jamal as black guy with fat
They give him what he believes to be victories-the opportunity for a speech, the chance to prove his worth in the battle royal, the college scholarship-all of it, to keep him running. He finally realizes it. By studying this fascinating character which , I think, represents all blacks of that time I discovered that the prejudice is one problem that we as a society have to become more aware of. We have to get past the cover, and open up the book and read it before we judge. If people would do this it
It is really hard for me to choose only three films out of my favorites. After a thorough selection, the three winners of my favorite films are Forrest Gump (1994), Memento (2000) and Shutter Island (2010).
Forrest Gump is uneducated and acts if so he was a teenager. He does not think of what he is doing most of the times. Forrest had a hard time from when he was a child with braces on his legs to being bullied by other students. No one takes Forrest seriously and it goes on throughout his lifetime. Michael Oher is a young black African American who was abandoned by his drug addicted parents and left him alone to defend for himself. He does not have the proper education to be successful in life. He goes through hard times by going back to school and trying to make himself successful and two adults with a family of their own take him in as their own. In the end both character’s make out rich. Michael and Forrest never seemed to give up on what they believed in.

In Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer explores the human fascination with the purpose of life and nature. Krakauer documents the life and death of Chris McCandless, a young man that embarked on an Odyssey in the Alaskan wilderness. Like many people, McCandless believed that he could give his life meaning by pursuing a relationship with nature. He also believed that rejecting human relationships, abandoning his materialistic ways, and purchasing a book about wildlife would strengthen his relationship with nature. However, after spending several months enduring the extreme conditions of the Alaskan wilderness, McCandless’ beliefs begin to work against him. He then accepts that he needs humans, cannot escape materialism, and can never fully understand how nature functions. Most importantly, he realizes that human relationships are more valuable than infinite solitude. McCandless’ gradual change of heart demonstrates that exploring the wilderness is a transformative experience. Krakauer uses the life and death of Chris McCandless to convey that humans need to explore nature in order to discover the meaning of life.
Throughout the history of western civilization, the human race has had a continuing relationship with nature and the environment. Progress has improved the way in which human beings use natural resources and the ways in which they work together to improve the quality of life. Developments in science and technology of the twentieth-century have greatly improved the way that humans interact. As the technological advancements of the twentieth-century progressed from the discovery of vaccinations to computer age technology, humans have learned to take a considerable amount of control over their lives and the environment as compared to the past, in which humans had very little control over nature. These progressions have had positive and negative effects on society. Positively, medical research has been able to allow the human race to lengthen life span and improve the work of genetics. Science has connected the globe through computer technology. The negative aspects of progression have some far-reaching consequences, such as new forms of imperialism, the atomic bomb, and destruction of the environment.
“The Bear” is a book written in 1942 by William Faulkner that deals with the life of an ancient bear named Old Ben. Old Ben affects the lives of most hunters that know him, and most importantly it he has a great influence on Ike and the wilderness. “The Bear” is not only about the life of Old Ben, but it is also about the wilderness, racism, possession of land, and the meaning of humanity. The interpretation of wilderness Faulkner present in his book is that the forest represents an essential connection among liberty and humanity (Radloff). Through allusion, William Faulkner uses imagery and symbolism to connect liberty and humanity with the wilderness.
Throughout history, many individuals wish to discover and explain the relationship between nature and society, however, there are many complexities relating to this relationship. The struggle to understand how nature and society are viewed and connected derives from the idea that there are many definitions of what nature is. The Oxford dictionary of Human Geography (2003), explains how nature is difficult to define because it can be used in various contexts as well as throughout different time and spaces. As a result of this, the different understandings of what nature is contributes to how the nature society relationship is shaped by different processes. In order to better understand this relation there are many theorists and philosophers
