There are many reasons that can influence an individual to conceal their true thoughts and feelings. However, one of the most prevalent factor in today’s society is to attain acceptance while reprimanding prejudice. An individual can face prejudice for many different reasons. For example, their complexion or their culture are just two factors that can build discriminatory borders against them. Likewise, for the protagonist in Invisible Man, the complexion of his skin becomes a barrier against him and stops him from expressing his true thoughts. The racial prejudice that resides within the citizens of Harlem, impedes their judgment as well as their ability to see the protagonist’s true talents. For the invisible man it is his complexion that stops him from expressing his thoughts freely. The color of his skin is noticed first rather than his words by the racist residents of Harlem. Multiple times the narrator becomes limited, and has to adapt to the expectations presented to him by an all white society. These limitations infringe upon the protagonists ability to follow his own thoughts and feelings, which ultimately takes away his ability to express his own self. In today’s society many individuals have to face racial prejudice. Also, it is this discrimination that makes one want to change their personality, opinions, or themselves as a whole. However, one must realize that life comes with difficulties, whether that difficulty is something small or as big as racial discrimination. Instead of emulating or allowing the racist words of an individual to become a hurdle, one should use it as an opportunity to prosper and exhibit their own
