Imperialism and Colonialism are Obstacles to Global Capitalism

Castro Gomez claims that forces like imperialism and colonialism, which played a major role in exploitation of human labor that have now been by passed by time and are no longer applicable in this modern world. In addition to this, imperialism and colonialism have become obstacles to the modern global capitalism (Santiago Castro-Go´mez pg 428). According to the author, the 17th century was full of enlightenment, which aimed at wooing laborers. This also came in with the identity of the bourgeois. This was not only the end of the fight as many intellectuals fought to have colonies in the rest of the world. Ultimately, countries like US, Germany, France, UK, Italy and Netherlands joined the fight that culminated in rapid industrial revolution in Europe and in the US. The author also argues that this constant struggle for resources and colonies reached its maximal point when it turned up to World War I. According to the author, this later moved to a cold war as many countries defined their territories as they aimed at colonization. The era of colonialism and industrial revolution is what built the empire. During this time, labor force was the determining factor for reproduction. In this modern world, the principal of productive global capital is no longer on labor capital but on human brain and mind (Santiago Castro-Go´mez). This is what the author suggests to be the reason that has ended colonialism and imperialism. Europe is no longer the center of world systems. The world is now revolutionized and every single nation is able to address its issues with respect to their governments. According to the author, European identity has vanished and is no more. ...n countries like the Britain depend so much on them for foreign donor funds. For this reason, these countries feel so insecure due to their dependence. However, on the other hand this dependence has contributed a great role in modernization especially through donations of technology in terms of goods and services.
This means that Western countries have shaped and dictated the trends of modernization. Western countries that are more developed are able to control some of the resources, which are required by the less developed countries hence dictating the trends of modernization due to adoption of a single path to modernization.
In conclusion, it is evident that the path for modernization has wiped out cases of imperialism and colonization. However a deep and critical reflection still shows that colonization is still adamantly playing a major role in modernization.
