What is danger? The term/word danger is relative and has a different meaning to each person who uses it. Danger is found in all walks of life, from the tall buildings of Wall Street, to the slums of the ghetto. It is found in the confines behind prison bars and even in the most prestigious country club. One place where danger is thought to be exempt is on the playing field of a great American past time, society knows as football. Football is a dangerous sport, as it is a contact sport with some of the most athletically gifted human beings playing it. The Mayo Clinic found that the risk of high school football players developing degenerative neurological diseases later in life is no greater than if they had been in the band, glee or choir. Riley also states that the data suggests that a normal adolescent life puts them at risk for brain injury all the time. Boot has provided that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health surveyed 3,439 men who played in the NFL for at least five seasons between 1958 and 1988, and found that they actually live longer than the general population. In fact it is more likely than not that player will get injured playing sports. Players suffer sprained ankles, bruises, broken bones and concussions. It is part of the game, an unfortunate likelihood. Sports in itself is dangerous and football is amongst the top of the list in terms of danger. It is up to the parents to decide whether or not it is a risk that they are willing to take. Does a boy channel the passion he inherited from his father to a different type of sport or activity? This is an aspect of the game that not many are aware of and it is a serous issue that needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later.
