I. History Harley-Davidson has survived through many decades and is an American business icon. Rivals have often successfully imitated motorcycles , but never duplicating them. It is often seen as those who are experiencing a "mid life crisis", are a part of a motorcycle gang, or an investment bankers that are attracted to these particular motorcycles. The lack of competition for Harley-Davidson gave them a profitable advantage and they became quite successful with the sales of their motorcycles. However, by1969, Harley-Davidson experienced some financial hardships through losing ventures and was purchased by American Machine and Foundry Company(AMF). As time went on Honda and Kawasaki entered the U.S. market and by 1981 Japanese motorcycles were viewed as a high performance motorcycle that was also dependable. Harley Davidson has built a brand that is more than just the spread eagle on a load rumbling motorcycle, but for those who purchase a Harley they are purchasing a lifestyle, an experience, or piece of American culture if you will. Due to this differentiating factor Harley has been able to charge a premium for its products and still be successful against its lower priced competition. General Motors was build in 1892 by an R. Olds who created the Oldsmobile his vision was to create horseless carriages. He started the automobile factory in Detroit and was soon followed by others in the industry, and he and several others decided to create amalgamation of over different companies. The new automobile entities became known as General Motors. Each new partner brought in his brand as they began consolidating (general Motors ,2014).
The first thought of motorcycles as a means of transportation began in the year 1900. The pioneers’ of this field were William S. Harley and his lifelong friend Arthur Davidson. They were both born and raised in Milwaukee, WI. It took them almost three years to build their first production ready motorcycle which was a single cylinder, 10 cubic inch engine.
