Gun Control The gun control debate in America has been highly controversial for many years and after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the question arose if citizens should be allowed to own firearms. The goal of gun control laws is to stop heinous people from murdering innocent citizens. USA Today writer John R. Lott stated that killers target the defenseless and that gun control laws do not necessarily hinder crime and violence. Nearly every public mass shooting in the USA has taken place where citizens are banned from carrying guns, places such as schools, restaurants, churches, hospitals and theaters (Bitto). However, if those who are fearful found themselves in a situation, for instance in a movie theater, where an assailant is insanely killing random people, my assumption is they’d be quite happy if a citizen took the life of the killer before the killer could take theirs. Another example, Luby’s Cafeteria shooting on October 16th, 1991, labeled a gun free zone, a man crashed his truck into the restaurant and shot multiple people with no resistance while one helpless victim could only stand there because she was required to leave her gun in her car (Stockman). This is one of many instances where gun free zones and the laws that forbid people to conceal carry are not going to protect people. The more law abiding citizens carrying guns, the fewer places criminals will be able to senselessly murder people. In reality, gun free zones are seldom considered “safe” for people. Suggested gun free zones are meant to keep guns out of an area in order to stop all shootings. These areas are merely zoned off with a sign stating the area a “gun free zone”. If a deranged person has the notion to murder innocent people, the gun free zone is the safest place for him/her to do so. Why not? After all, there won’t be anybody there that will confront the killer with a gun. Predators attack the weakest prey likewise criminals attack unarmed people.
