The Great Gatsby is a novel that was written in 1925 by F. Scott Fitzgerald. In his most famous book, Fitzgerald talks about American society in the 1920s. After World War I, the economy was booming. The economy was growing very fast, and was experiencing unprecedented prosperity. People began to focus on their money and wealth, they gradually lost themselves, lost many traditions and their morals. Gatsby’s death can illustrate the corrupt society of 1920s. From The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald points out several ideas to prove that 1920s society was realistic. Fitzgerald explained his satirical portrait through Gatsby’s rise to wealth, his death and Daisy’s vanity.

Daisy symbolizes of beauty and wealth. She may have loved Gatsby in the past, but she changed after she married Tom. Tom is from old money, and gives Daisy the type of prosperous life. She was used to when she is reunited with Gatsby, Gatsby stills love her even though he noticed that Daisy has changed. “‘Her voice is full of money,’ he said suddenly” (Pg 128)， Gatsby notices how wealth has changed Daisy from the woman he used to know. During the long time waiting for Daisy, money changed society, value placed on things, and people have bad behavior. Five years have passed and Gatsby realizes that their love is not the same. He wanted to prove that he has become successful by getting Daisy back. Daisy is the final proof he needs to show off his success. Daisy wanted to keep Gatsby in her life, but did not want to lose her relationship with Tom. From Gatsby’s death, we can tell that Daisy is a very selfish person. Daisy is actually the person who killed Myrtle, but she didn’t go to surrender. She chose to let Gatsby take the blame which leads to his death. “I called up Daisy half an hour after we found him, called her instinctively and without hesitation. But she and Tom had gone away early that afternoon, and taken baggage with them.” (Pg 172) Daisy and Tom left right after the accident, so they would not get involved. Daisy was in love with Gatsby, and when Gatsby died for her, she left him. This shows how selfish Daisy is. Gatsby loves Daisy more than himself, but Daisy is the opposite, she only cares about herself. Fitzgerald offers his audience the proof through his story that there is only a slight possibility that a person can be both wealthy and ethical. When he first meets Daisy, Gatsby becomes infatuated with his idea of her, or rather, the false persona that she creates of herself. In fact, Gatsby reveals that “she was the first ‘nice’ girl he had ever known” (155). Gatsby was so impressed with Daisy mainly because of her wealth and her status; it is what he wants. However, Daisy chooses Tom Buchanan over Gatsby, solely because of his social status. As a result, Gatsby revolves his whole life around her: he becomes wealthy, creates a new image of himself, and buys a house across the bay from Daisy. For instance, he fabricates lies about how “ [he is] the son of some wealthy people in the middle-west” (69) and how “ [he] was brought up in America but educated at Oxford” (69) in order to impress her. These lies end up altering others’ perspectives of him - not necessarily in a positive way - and impacting his life as a whole. Daisy unwittingly transforms Gatsby into a picture-perfect image of the 1920s: lavish parties, showy cars, and a false illusion of the attainment of the American Dream. Despite Gatsby’s newfound wealth and success, he never fully accomplishes his dream: to get Daisy. Gatsby’s final act for the sake of Daisy has no impact on her feelings towards him. Tom and Daisy Buchanan, the rich couple, seem to have everything they could possibly want. Though their lives are full of anything you could imagine, they are unhappy and seek to change, Tom drifts on "forever seeking a little wistfully for the dramatic turbulence of some irrecoverable football game"(pg. 10) and reads "deep books with long words in them"(pg. 17) just so he has something to talk about. Even though Tom is married to Daisy he has an affair with Myrtle Wilson and has apartment with her in New York.. Daisy is an empty character, someone with hardly any convictions or desires. Even before her relationships with Tom or, Gatsby are seen, Daisy does nothing but sit around all day and wonder what to do with herself and her friend Jordan. She knows that Tom is having an affair, yet she doesn't leave him even when she hears about Gatsby loving her. Daisy lets Gatsby know that she too is in love with him but cant bring herself to tell Tom goodbye except when Gatsby forces her too. Even then, once Tom begs her to stay, even then Daisy forever leaves Gatsby for her old life of comfort. Daisy and Tom are perfect examples of wealth and prosperity, and the American Dream. Yet their lives are empty, and without purpose.
Characters in The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald are often described differently than they actually act throughout the novel. In the beginning of the novel, Daisy is told to be “by far the most popular of all the young girls in Louisville”. She was said to have great beauty, and its even said that she holds her popularity spot because of it. She is also described as a “fool” which means she is beautiful, just like an angel. As we read on, we come to see that Daisy is actually very careless, selfish, and only focuses herself on wealth and power. She never looked at the consequences of her actions; and she let others clean up the messes she made. She wanted her daughter to grow up just like her, even though it’s a life nobody wanted to live. She even gave up her true love to be with somebody who had money and a good repetition. As perceived in the novel, Daisy is the most despicable character in the novel of The Great Gatsby.
