The saying “history repeats itself” is used quite often, but how many times have you actually seen it happen? The book Animal Farm portrays the idea of history repeating itself. The character Benjamin and the pigs in the story show history repeating itself throughout the book. In addition to these characters within the book, North Korea displays history's repetition outside the book. The actions of the pigs express this theme by starting with good intentions, but slowly becoming more and more like what they were trying to avoid. In the beginning of the story Old Major gives a speech to the animals on the farm, and in this speech he mentions how cruel the humans are. At the beginning of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, an aging pig named Old Major gives a speech to the rest of the animals. The sun rises. It’s a new day, soon to be filled with hard work. Animals are working hard, overcoming many difficulties by mere determination and work. But it all falls back to the way it was, going absolutely nowhere. In the book Animal Farm, written by George Orwell, this is exactly what happens. The animals work to tremendous extents, especially the horse named Boxer, but their hard work gets them nothing. They give their blunt work for years on a windmill that falls down twice, they work past specific difficulties in order to bring in the harvest that eventually leads them to lower food rations and, specifically, Boxer sacrifices his health for the sake of hard work to only be killed, as if he was nothing. Because the animals work hard to overcome struggles and difficulties but receive nothing good from it, it is clear that the theme in Animal Farm is that working hard can sometimes go nowhere.

In the world today animals are treated poorly and are overworked under harsh conditions. In Animal Farm by George Orwell the idea of Animalism and lack of freedom is shown. Old Major gave an inspiring speech about how the animals live together without humans. After not being fed the animals attack Jones and end up taking over the farm. The animals survive on the farm, by making commandments, assigning jobs, and soon electing a leader. With Snowball and Napoleon guiding them they soon come across an amazing idea that could shorten the work week. After debating on the different viewpoints they both had on the windmill, Napoleon trains dogs to attack Snowball. With Napoleon now as the leader and Squealer as his spokesman they both run “Animal Farm”. With the victory at the Battle of Cowshed the animals start to have hope, after the windmill was knocked down by the humans everything falls apart. After years of mistreatment the animals decide to fight back. Unknowingly they place themselves under a manipulating leader. The animals soon believe that Napoleon is always right. In the end they lose their strongest most dedicated animal, Boxer. In order to secure a life of luxury for Napoleon and his fellow pigs, Napoleon (with Squealer as his spokesman) uses language that intimidates, language that distorts the truth, and language that appeals to the emotion of the others to manipulate the gullible animals of the farm.
There is a substantial amount of conflicts that occur in this satirical story. Often these conflicts are between the pigs and the rest of the animals. Only a minute portion of the animals didn’t really have some sort of conflict with Snowball, Napoleon, Squealer, or the rest of the dominating pigs. Overall, Snowball was a better leader than Napoleon, yet the animals reacted differently to Napoleon than to Snowball.
After the Animal Revolution the pigs take the initiative and place themselves in charge because of their claim of having higher intelligence. Over time this power begins to distort the basis of their revolt by recreating the same social situation they were previously in. “When the pigs takeover they claim that their goal is to preside a farm of equal animals, all working together to support one another, yet power quickly proves too much for a pig.” Though the animals originally took over the farm to increase the animal’s independence as a whole, because of the pig’s superiority they soon take the place of the humans further limiting their independence.
The novella Animal Farm is certainly one of the best examples in literature of how a society transforms into tyranny. This particular piece of art brings to light a problem that every society stumbles upon, a problem that cannot be avoided. Of course, it is the problem of governance. George Orwell, living in the very tumultuous and uncertain times, observed the tendency of some countries to move towards totalitarianism. And by writing Animal Farm, he wanted to show what societies would look like, if this trend were taken too far. According to him, this leads to absolute eradication of justice, and to the situation, where every citizen of such society lives under strong oppression and in total misery. He wrote his work using literary device of allegory in order to warn humankind about the hazards that tyranny brought. His main characters were anthropomorphic animals which represented certain aspects of every society. In the beginning of the novella, animals overturned the avaricious men from the governing position. The reason for such drastic measures is that they grew discontented with oppressive conditions that men had created for them. This action gave them opportunity to establish a society devoid of fear and pressure, but the society, in which justice and equality thrive. However, their endeavor suffered complete collapse. The society that had been meant to be just transformed into tyranny, where the rights of every inhabitant were suffocated. During establishing a just society, animals went astray thus creating perfect conditions for tyranny to emerge. This essay will explain what steps made it possible.

In Animal Farm by George Orwell, the dominating pigs are the ultimate hypocrites. They implement many harsh rules for the farm, but continuously bend and break them according to their own needs. These actions lead to the breakdown of the animals’ supposed communal society and make evident how the dystopian elements in the novel lead to a controlling and dictatorial government. Through the ruling class of pigs, Orwell is able to provide commentary on the authoritarian governments of his time, as well as those in the future.
