When considering Freud’s legacy, tell me what you think was his greatest contribution to the field and also what you see as his greatest mistake. Freud’s greatest contribution was the fact that he was the first one to come up with Psychoanalysis, however; with that that being said even though he was not the first one to come up with the unconsciousness of the mind but Freud did make it famous through his theory of the Ego, ID, and Superego theory. Freud’s other greatest contribution was talk therapy. Freud’s greatest mistake was the “penis envy” theory towards women and how women wanting a penis but in reality women just want the same rights that men do. For example, back then women were mainly at home and only had sex to create babies while the men had the rights to vote, careers and so forth and this irritated women because women …show more content…
Adler believed that in order to understand an individual’s behavior (I.e. how they act, their goals, how they view things, how they cope with situations, etc.) to the fullest extent it to look back at his or her childhood memories to piece a puzzle back together of what really happened and why they act the way they do. Early childhood memories are extremely important because those memories, even if we cannot remember them helped shaped us to how we are personality wise, and helped shaped us on how we choose our goals in life and how to pursue then, as well as how we cope, live and interact with others in everyday life. Adler also believed that, “early memories are often in error, meaning that could be false or viewed differently that what actually really happened since children often times do not understand the full story, mainly remembering the bad and not the positive aspects of a situation. Children’s understandings are limited and don’t quite understand time yet” (Chapter 3, pg.
Adler (1930-1938 Individual psychology try and find original) proposed that children struggle to achieve a sense of capability to deal with the world outside of the

Mental illness is a disease that cannot be fully cured but controlled to some degree. There are multiple types of mental illnesses, ranging from mood disorders to schizophrenia. A mental illness is when there is an abnormality in the brain. An example would be when a person is diagnosed with depression; there is a lack of serotonin in the brain. Medications can balance the levels of serotonin, and either cure the depression or decrease the symptoms of depression. Mental illness is fairly common; 1 in 4 people are diagnosed with mental illness. Today there are multiple ways to diagnose a person with a mental illness. Doctors mostly use therapy and quizzes to diagnose someone with a mental illness. I am going to use the Freud theory to diagnose
...een disproven or modified by psychologists today, however his impact will always remain strong. His thoughts on human behavior were deep and original, which makes his techniques for treating psychological illness innovating. His use of self-awareness for unconscious thoughts was an intelligent approach for his time. “The principles of treatment which Freud enunciated were quite unlike those followed by conventional physicians in the practice of medicine, and must have seemed revolutionary in the period before the First World War when they were formulated” (Storr, 1989, p. 95). The way in which modern psychotherapy and forms of psycho-analysis are conducted today, is based off of Freud’s procedure (Storr, 1989, p. 95).
Sigmund Freud was a pioneer within the field of psychology who developed multiple theories that introduced the world to the inner meanings of the human unconscious. He created the theory of psychoanalysis, which allowed him to enter the world of the unconscious mind. He also proposed that humans go through a transition of various psychosexual stages, each level containing a different drive and desire. These urges were governed by the three components of the mind: the id, the ego, and the superego. He also believed that humans create defense mechanisms in order to drive away anxiety, guilt, and depression. However, he believed his greatest work resided within his interpretation of dreams through a method he called dream analysis. Each aspect of his studies and theories attempt to identify the reason behind human behavior.
The methods he used to obtain his information and data raised questions by other scientists. His research on children was lacking, as was his use of empirical studies, his research was male-dominated and also lacked universality. The theory of the id, ego and superego develops from birth into childhood therefore the use of case studies on adults and the lack of empirical study does not seem feasible enough to have developed this theory. First of all there is no guarantee that the memories of these adults on their childhood would be accurate, there was not any factual, re-testable data so it lacked reliability and validity secondly each case and person’s experience is different and therefore cannot be use to determine the development of an entire population. Freud’s theory was further biased due to him overlooking social and environmental aspects, which prevent universality; he was a European man who researched other upper middle class Europeans whose everyday living and circumstances differed greatly from others in

Shortly thereafter, they married and had six children of their own three boys and three girls. His children describe him as a loving and compassionate man.
Sigmund Freud is one of the most influential people of the twentieth century for exploring the human mind more thoroughly than anyone before his time. His contributions have become embedded within the vocabulary of western society not only influencing psychology, as well as literature, art, and the parenting mechanisms of everyday people. He is the founding father of psychoanalysis which is often known as the talking cure, a method for treating mental illness and a theory which is intended to explain human behavior. He articulated and refined the concepts of the unconscious, infantile sexuality and repression, and he proposed a theory of the minds structure. Freud’s innovative treatment of human actions, dreams, and cultural artifacts has had
The aim of this essay is to clarify the basic principles of Freud’s theories and to raise the main issues.
These and other discoveries of Freud's changed the world in many ways. It was then possible to understand the origin of behavior and how to change it. Psychoanalysis opened doors to the unconscious mind and gave reasons for certain behavior. The work of Sigmund Freud was only a small portion of the gradual control over nature that humans began possessing at the turn of the century, yet in the world of psychology this was quite a large step.
Adler’s theory holds that conscious aspects of behavior are central to the development of personality. A major tenet of the theory is that individuals strive to become successful, the best that they can be. This theory places a lot of emphasis on the birth order. It is believed that birth order is not just the simple biological ordinal position; born first, second, third. To the contrary it is a second system of birth order of youngest child, oldest child, middle child, determining an individual’s psychological position. He believed
