The reasons that I gotten into the field of public administration was the community needs and its’ lifeblood. Plus, the thirst and continuous desire to improve the overall policies for ideal of a good government. Ever since I gotten into the graduate school for Master of Public Administration. I had my eyes wide opened to the world and all of its’ opportunities. For example, you will find that I used to work as intern for several departments within the San Diego region. My first involvement was the City of San Diego’s Human Relations Commission was focus on legal issues related with human rights. Those issues are often being murky and underlying the major issues in the city. My job was to navigate around them and find out what’s work and what’s not. I felt that I wanted to know what the city’s struggle and how to mitigate them. Then at one semester I decided to take an Emergency Management class and it was really interested class. Especially how the organization structure working in frequent temporary inter-organization management in the event of disaster. So, I went on my second internship with County of San Diego’s Office of Emergency Services. From there, I learned a big deal about the structure of their. I even did participate their mock-training in event of emergency regard to Ebola spread as if it was “disaster level”. I believe that ideal is what I should do for my future. Once again I mentioned that I decided my career goal should be a future City Manager. Not just because I am playing the SimCity game that compelled me to be one. I felt that, as City Manager is a huge responsibility and direct contact person to the Mayor or/and the City Council. On Monday, April 13th, 2009, I visited the Culver City city council meeting, and found that they operate using a council-manager form of government. For a city with a population of about 38,000, this type of governmental structure is fairly common, and I was not surprised to see it in action in a community where the median household income is around $56,000 a year. Culver City is also a culturally rich community with a 60 percent Caucasian population, and a quarter of the residents are either of African American or Asian decent. The mayor, D. Scott Malsin, is one of five members on the council, and his term as mayor is on a rotating basis. Having been to a Hermosa Beach city council meeting with a similar council-manager structure, I knew what to expect.
The new city manager must have the ability to anticipate, think critically, interpret, decide and learn. An example of a strategic thinker would be if a major hurricane were to make land fall in the city. He or she would need to anticipate some of the possible concerns of the citizens might have during a major hurricane making land fall in the city. He or she must be able to think critically about how to get information out to citizens as quickly as possible, how to prevent major damage and ways to prevent possible deaths. He or she would need to interpret what is the possible affects of the amount of what that is forecasted during the hurricane. He or she would need to decide what actions must take place to keep the citizens of the city safe, out of harms way and most of informed. When I began this class, I had never had any experience or knowledge on non-profit organizations. After reading the chapters and doing the project for CHASI, I began to realize that non-profit could be my niche. I chose to pursue a degree in criminal justice, because of the many job possibilities, but I never would have imagined non-profit being one of those possible careers for myself. I was raised under the philosophy from both sides of my family, that if you give, you will get in return, I believe this so much and I have witnessed it personally throughout this semester. I have given my time and effort to raise money for people, who I don’t know and who are less fortunate than some, and although I may not receive money or items back in exchange, I get to feel a sense of pride, which is more than enough. So when I went to the nonprofit career website and looked through the job listing, there were many that I was interested in but only a couple that I could actually see myself doing.
Volunteerism, civic engagement and advocacy are the driving forces for creating change and making a positive impact in your community and society at large. While gaining internship and job experience can lead to community impact and social change, it’s important for us to remember that before we start advocating for change and informing others about issues we care about, we need to fully understand the complexity and depth of the social, environmental, or economic issue we are passionate about.

Two years ago, I was writing my letter of intent for my application to the Master of Public Administration (MPA) with a concentration in Healthcare Administration revealing my failures, and most significantly, that I lost my passion and didn’t know where to start. I also conceded that I was relatively unaware of the field of Public Administration (PA). Little did I know, examining PA theories would enable me to connect the final dots in the big picture of my life, where I came from, who I’d come to be, what choices I’d made, the relationships I nurtured, and my dreams and desires for the future. Although confidence came slowly and awkwardly, I discovered my desire to contribute to the advancement of public health policies. I am writing to express my interest in continuing to the Doctoral program in the School of Public Administration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). I am absolutely interested in the commitment to the advancement of knowledge, and confident my experience in higher education and academic research will contribute to my successful completion of the Ph.D. program, in the specialization area of public policy.
From October of 2013 to March of 2014, as a sophomore in high school, I had the opportunity to participate in the ruling body of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area, the Atlanta Regional Commission’s (ARC), program of the Model Atlanta Regional Commission (MARC). In the MARC program, 50 students –including myself- from all the districts in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area came together under the guidance of the ARC to learn about public policy and city planning in the ever developing urban metropolis. The students were voted into different committees to consult and resolve some of Atlanta’s growing problems. The provided the opportunity of talking to young adults of different backgrounds and identities and collaborate to create a resolution to one of Atlanta’s different problems. The resolutions revolved around improving our community and helping those currently not accommodated with current resources.
In the future I would like to see myself, as a continuously promoted public official who could possibly become a pro-active politician in today’s demanding political arena. To achieve this, I would like to gain more knowledge which can help me reach intellectual maturity to the latest practices adopted in the field of Public Administration.
