Family Tradition In Robert Frost's 'Everyday Use'

The story of “Everyday Use” is a story based upon two blood sisters with absolutely nothing in common. Maggie is more of a homebody with her mom sticking to family heritage and tradition. Her sister Dee on the other hand left to go to college and completely change her way of life, thinking and didn’t thinking family tradition wasn’t important anymore. Unlike her sister Maggie who thought it was everything to her. It was a part of her that she enjoyed and truly embraced as a person. The tension between the two sisters, one quilt and a family heirloom is what make this story culturally diverse even in today’s society. The few I have is at least twenty-five years old. They are made from the same type of old clothing material like in “Everyday Use” old shirts, blankets, or whatever my grandmother could find around her house. I’ve taken them all across the world with me from Japan, Texas, and now over in Florida with me. Now that I have a family as time comes I will pass them on to my two boys when they get older to really understand family heritage. Until that time comes they will stay with me tucked away in the closet. In comparison to “Everyday Use” Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken” has direct ties to this story as in the two sister went in different paths in life. The poem and the story share several life choices either pick the path lightly travel or pick the road commonly traveled by many people. In life a lot of times we have several choices to make either right after high school or even during high school. As a kid growing up my sister and I would get Into heated arguments about some of the most random things. Like who would lick the left over cake mix out of the bowl, or who would even be the first one who would stay up late at night on the school nights. The biggest thing for siblings is “Parental Attitude” (Handling Sibling Rivalry) how you handle the situation at hand with each child. In this story the mom handle the situation between Maggie and Dee to her best judgement. At the end the mother picked Maggie to give the quilt to, because she kept her humbleness towards the family. Another logical reason the mother picked Maggie could easily be that she has a handicap from the house fires. It was Maggie’s handicap she thought she wasn’t as cute as her sister
