Michael Jordan's childhood and teenage years provided little evidence of the superstar he would later become. In fact, Jordan failed to make his basketball team in high school because of his height. Besides his early failures in basketball, Jordan had a typical and normal childhood; he was born in Brooklyn on February 17, 1963 to a family of five, but his family moved to North Carolina when he was just three. His father was influential to the young Michael, and it was his father who kept Jordan from being tempted by street life. After being cut from the basketball team, Jordan worked hard at his skills and the following year he made the team. After graduating from high school, Jordan accepted a scholarship to the University of North Carolina. At UNC, he was voted as the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year in 1982. This would be the start of a magnificent basketball career.

Jordan climbed the ladder of success by becoming the best at what he did. He was naturally talented, but at the higher levels of any sport, talent alone will not ensure success; Jordan's dedication, perseverance, and practice allowed him to be successful. Moreover, his early experiences in success only increased his desire for greater success and glory. Just like his failures in his high school years, his successes in his university years compelled him to seek greater successes. His successes at UNC, furthermore, contributed to his confidence as a leader and person, generating future successes.
