Horowitz effectively uses imagery to create tension throughout the novel. He does this by giving detailed a description of what is happening, the scene and events are created so the reader can visualise the entire sequence of events. “The roof buckled and three huge metal fingers tore through the skin of the car like a fork through an eggshell. One of the fingers grazed the side of his head... any closer and it would have cracked his skull” . Horrowitz instantly creates tension, by putting Alex in a near-death situation. The reader imagines himself into Alex’s situation while he was trapped inside the car. This hair raising effective is created since there is no build-up to the point the claws tear through the car, it happens so suddenly that it shocks the reader. The fact that Alex could almost have been killed had he been any closer to the claws further increases the level of tension.
The other reason for this choking feeling is because the reader has just been introduced to Alex, who is an innocent schoolboy. It would be terrible if he would die at such an early stage in his life in such gruesome way. The reader hopes and almost prays that nothing has happened to Alex and remains tensed until Alex manages to escape from the car before it is crushed.
Another example in which the author creates tension through the use of imagery is “ Overhead he noticed a security camera swivelling toward him. He made himself as small as he could, crouching behind the fountain.” Alex is snooping around the Stormbreaker factory, in order to discoverer the secret behind the computers. He is disobeying the orders he had been given. He is doing what was forbidden and getting caught and being reported to Vole would amount to...

... of the devices that Horowitz has used in the novel Stormbreaker to create tension, but they are perhaps the most effective devices he uses. His use of imagery allows the reader to visualize every scene and almost relive every situation with Alex. He almost drags you into every scene affecting your own sense and sensibilities. His effective use of tone also helps to create tension, as they can change the mood from happy to sad to dangerous. It almost burns you with curiosity. Another effective device used throughout the novel is Diction. The little words he uses, have a bigger impact when creating tension. Often more than one thinks. He effectively changes the mood from calm to stressful, from serene to dangerous.
Overall Anthony Horowitz effectively created tension and suspense by the effective use of these devices and many others in order to write a best seller.
1) This quote is an example of imagery because it uses figurative language to describe what New York is like late at night. As well as it uses words
Literary devices are tools used by the author to help the reader understand a given literary work. Writers use different literary devices depending on their style and what they wish their reader to get out of their work. One important literary device that is essential for a successful literary work is theme. Theme is the general insight into life that the author shares with the reader. There are a number of different methods from which an author can choose to present his/her theme. One common strategy is to communicate the theme through the use of mood; the overall feeling or emotion conjured within the reader. In Edgar Allan Poe's short story, "The Cask of Amontillado," and in Saki's short story, "The Interlopers," the mood evoked within the reader is used to communicate the short story's overall theme.
Imagery has been used by William Faulkner to create parallels that strengthen the themes of the story. The imagery is used as a tool to appeal to the reader to convey the authors purpose.
Tension is defined as “pleasurable excitement and anticipation regarding an outcome, such as the ending of a mystery novel”(reference.com). In Hamlin Garland’s story, “Up the Coolly” and Sherwood Anderson’s story “The Departure”, both authors portray the tension at a subtle amount throughout the story. In Sherwood Anderson’s short story is about a man makes a life changing decisions which causes the past to fulfil his brain and make him realize that all his memories were made in Ohio. Now that he has made the decision moved to New York, the people who surround him give him advice and get him ready for what the city holds for him. In the same way, “Up the Coolly” provides a dark and depressing vibe that is expressed off the main character Howard
Imagery is one of the components that were used by Edwards to make his story more persuasive. As the short story begins, the first sentence was an example of imagery. Edwards wrote when men are on Gods hands and they could fall to hell. natural men are held in the hands of God, over the pit of hell Knowing that you might fall into hell at any moment should scare you. God decided to save you until he wants to let you fall into an eternity of burning flames. Another example of imagery is when he talks abo...
The audience is directed to react positively to the protagonist through the use of costume colour choice. The protagonist is wearing white pyjamas underneath a yellow rain coat; white is the symbol of purity and innocence while yellow represents warmth and happiness. During the tension scene, an axe is used as a symbolistic prop. The axe, when used in a barn house, represents the seriousness of farm life, where animals are commodities and not family pets. The placement of the axe in the shadows emphasises it use as tool for death. As the axe is lifted from the wall the blade glints in the light, which does two things: it draws the viewers’ attention to the ominous object, adding to the tension, whilst warning viewers of the blades sharpness and reminding us of its use. Lastly the axe is used to propel the protagonist into action and become a voice for the pig, a voice for mercy and
Imagery is when the author presents a mental image through descriptive words. One prime example of imagery that the author uses is in paragraph 3; where she tells of a moment between a man and a woman. In this narration she states the time, year, outfit of each character described, and what the female character was doing. These details might come across as irrelevant, or unnecessary, but this is Didions way of showing what the blueprint of notebook it. Using imagery reinforces the foundation of the essay, and what the essay’s mission was.
The writer uses imagery, because he wants to let the readers into his mind. By describing the scene for the readers, makes the readers fell like they were there. Therefore, it gives us a better ability to emphasize with him.
In conclusion, many other devices mentioned in Foster's book were employed throughout the film “Pulp Fiction”. However, the most prominent devices were quests, archetypes, food, and violence. These devices were used to make the story more interesting, easier for the audience to relate to, and to make the film a little deeper than most. Any great film or literary work is bound to include the devices mentioned in Foster's book. In fact, it would be almost impossible to make a movie or story without them.
My second claim is that personification is the best literary device that gives suspense because it uses descriptive words to compare human like qualities with non-living things to explain what’s going on in the story. It uses such detail that the reader ponders about what will happen next. In
Imagery is used by many authors as a crucial element of character development. These authors draw parallels between the imagery in their stories and the main characters' thoughts and feelings. Through intense imagery, non-human elements such as the natural environment, animals, and inanimate objects are brought to life with characteristics that match those of the characters involved.
A good example of imagery can be found at the end of the story in the last paragraph. For this part of imagery, the main character Jackson Jackson has received his grandmother’s regalia from the pawn shop employee without having to pay the total of $999 he originally had to pay. (Alexie) “I took my grandmother’s regalia and walked outside. I knew that solitary yellow bead was part of me.
A Good Man is Hard to Find and Revelation, both have incredible usage of imagery and describes the characters very well. For example, in A Good Man is Hard to Find Flannery writes “ the grandmother had on a navy blue straw sailor at with a bunch of print. Her collars and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace and at her neckline she had pinned purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet. In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady” (O'Connor, 421). This excerpt from the book shows just how important painting a picture of the characters are to O'Connor. The story also uses a great use of imagery when it states, “ Stone Mountain: the blue granite that in some place came up to both sides of the highway; the brilliant red clay banks slightly streaked with purple; and the various crops that made rows of green lace-work on the ground. The trees were full of silver-white sunlight and the meanest of them sparkled” (O'Connor, 421) to describe what the grand...
Imagery is the use of symbols to convey an idea or to create a specific atmosphere for the audience. Shakespeare uses imagery in Macbeth often, the most prevalent one, is blood. I believe he uses this as a way to convey guilt, murder, betrayal, treachery and evil, and to symbolize forewarning of events.
An author's use of literary devices creates mental images for the reader and keeps the reader interested throughout the narrative. In "The Fall of the House of Usher", Poe uses suspense, symbolism, and Gothic elements, such as dark atmospheres, because his purpose is to make the reader anticipate upcoming events in the story.
