To research this question, I asked one of my Japanese friends, whose name is Akihisa, to record to his discourse. The reason why I chose him is because How he code-switches is completely opposite of mine. When he speaks Japanese, he is quieter than me, so I usually talk more than him. However, when he speaks English, he becomes more aggressive, so he speaks more than me when he speaks English. I put a list of our English proficiency below. Yutaka Akihisa

I also feel that how he gets drunk is really different when he drinks with only Japanese friends and international friends. When we drink with our foreign friends, he gets really drunk and starts dancing most of the time. Actually, I asked him two questions. 1. Do you think your characteristics are changed when you speak English? 2. Which language do you prefer to speak Japanese or English? His answer of the first question was “Yes, because I have almost never gotten mad in Japan, but I often get mad when I speak English.” And his answer of the second question was “I prefer to speak English because it is more interesting for me, but I don’t know why it is more interesting.” From these answers, he already knew that his characteristics are changed when he speaks English. Also, I assume that one possible reason why it happens is because he prefers to speak English than Japanese, so when he speaks English he enjoys speaking. For me, my answer of the second question is Japanese because it is my native language, so it is much more easier to speak, so when I speak English, I am not as talkative as when I speak Japanese.
