Who doesn’t love the crack of a wooden bat? It is one of the most beautiful sound in sports but are wooden bats going to help your game? There have been many people have wondered if using a wooden bat is beneficial to their baseball skills and even more don’t know the answer. There are in fact many things that help your batting abilities but also many that could not help your batting abilities. This paper is made to help you learn whether or not to use a wooden bat early on. Even if you are just coaching a team, you could start you young athletes on wooden bats to help them improve. One example of a wooden bat being used as an importatnt asset is that they can be used to develop strength in your swing. This will allow you to swing faster, with more power with any sort of bat. This leads into another asset in a swing, bat/barrel awareness. This helps you place the barrel with more accuracy, which allows you to get a better hit, leading into a possible extra-base hit. Those hits could help you become a better base-runner and helps your stats by raising your RBI (Runs Batted In) by scoring your teammates. I personally learned this last year, when I practiced with a wooden bat in my free time. While the last year, many of my hits didn’t travel a great distance, the year after, I had multiple extra-base hits. Despite there being so many pros, we must move on the the cons, the first of which is over-swinging. Due to the strength that you developed while swinging a wooden bat, you have a great chance of swinging too hard, causing you to A: look like a fool, and B: possibly straining your arm, which could ultimately make you rest too much, and miss a lot of the season, and lose batting
High tech aluminum baseball bats aren’t quite as new to the game as many people may think. Author, Patrick Hruby, wrote in Sports Illustrated, “introduced in the mid-1970’s… metal bats have become increasingly potent, forged with alloys… pressurized air chambers” (Hruby 42). Over the last few decades these aluminum ‘killer bats’ have evolved to be even more potent. “Some coaches and players claim these powerful bats are ruining the integrity of the game and placing pitchers at undue risk” (42). There aren't as many spots needed in baseball which makes it a little more easier and isn't time consuming such as wrestling is. Baseball is more like holding a pitch right and with the correct fluent arm motion. When wrestling is more like shooting a sweeping single and swiping the other leg out placing them on their back or stomach. Batting takes time to learn and lot of it. Its confusing if they drop their elbow on their swing and attack the ball with their hands it will take many reps to fix it. Baseball is where players get a rude awakening. No matter how amazing athletes are or think they are they always have bad technique somewhere. More than likely players will grow up playing that way. Torque is another key ingredient to a good power hitter, or even a good hitter. Torque is the result of two forces being applied to an object in opposite directions. In this case the two forces are being applied from the hands and wrists onto the bat. As you start your swing, instead of moving your hands directly at the ball, you want your hands to start a rotation. The top hand begins to move backwards while the lead arm drives the end of the bat towards the ball. The torque invloved is created around the point of the bat that lies between your hands. This torque greatly accelerates the head of the bat which will have act with a greater force when (or if ) it comes into contact with the ball.

There is some discrepency of where the sweet spot is on the bat. Some believe that the sweet spot is 17 inches from the end and others believe that it is 6 inches from the end. For a wooden bat, I tend to believe that the sweet spot is 6 inches from the end of a 34 inch bat (opposite of where your hands are). This is due to the fact that if you were to hit a ball 17 inches from the end, you would be hitting on the bat's emblem. If hit hard enough, the bat would break because this is a weak spot in the bat due to the stamping of the emblem.

The preparation I use includes working on my swing, working out, and studying other people’s ideas on hitting. These steps are necessary for me to have a successful season. These steps have proven to be a valuable aid in helping me to prepare for the season. I believe these steps are the basic steps to becoming a great baseball player.
