Similar to every other revolution around the world, women played a very important part in the French Revolution and many women are still significant to this day. Some women were acknowledged for their good work while there were other women who were looked down upon during this time. A few of the important women that played a huge role in this revolution consists of Claire Lacombe, Olympe de Gouges, and of course the infamous Marie Antoinette. In pre-revolutionary France, women had no rights, they were seen as the corrupted influences of society who only had one specific role. In the Tom Richey’s YouTube video about women and the French Revolution, he discusses this concept that women in society were given this role to stay at home and please men because they are seen as corrupted influences. Tom gives the example of Adam and Eve, as many know Eve was the one who ate the apple which basically cursed herself and Adam. Lacombe was such an important figure because of all the action she took, she was more than an actress. Lacombe would join sessions of the Legislative Assembly and began making friends to make money in order for her to stick around Paris. Lacombe used her acting skills to speak before the Legislative Assembly to basically try to be a voice for women. When the Legislative Assembly proceed to place King Louis under arrest on August 10th 1792, Lacombe was right there and even got shot in the arm which was when she was awarded and proclaimed as the Heroin of August 10th.
