F. Scott Fitzgerald presents many themes in his novel, The Great Gatsby. He uses a motif of cheating to support one of the major themes of lying that can be found throughout the book. Main characters such as Tom, and Daisy are found cheating on each other, many characters cheat the very laws of society, Gatsby cheats his way to wealth. Fitzgerald chooses to stress this theme so that readers could see how their actions played out and what in the end it lead to. The relationship between Myrtle and Tom is used by Fitzgerald to demonstrate the consequences of their affair. Daisy finds out that “Tom has some girl in New York” and it hurts her, because as her husband he should be faithful and should try his best to provide for her (Fitzgerald 15). …show more content…

This was the time were the federal government had made all alcohol illegal it's more commonly known as prohibition. Throughout the book it talks of how Gatsby cheated the law by selling alcohol. The reason you can deduce this is because at all of his parties the people get roaring drunk. Even Nick, the main character, gets himself drunk when he runs into jordan in one of Gatsby’s gardens during the novel. Later on in the book when Nick finally gets Daisy attend one of Gatsby’s famous parties where there was alcohol everywhere, in fact “a tray of cocktails” even seemed to “float” towards them (Fitzgerald. 43). Just a few examples of Cheating in the book and of course these lead to consequences, but luckily they were softer than before. Nick admits that his adsessive drunkenness at Gatsby’s parties was embarrassing and he was a man were his appearance meant everything. Gatsby was nearly busted by a cop which during this time and the laws he was breaking would lead to a lot of jail time.
