Why I Want To Read De Blij's Chapter Why Geography Matters?

As I read De Blij’s chapter, “Why Geography Matters...More Than Ever”, the things that kept coming to my mind were the reasons I decided to study geography in this class. As de Blij says, “[g]eography is a discipline of diversity, under whose ‘spatial’ umbrella we study and analyze processes, systems, behaviours, and . . . the ways in which the physical and human worlds are laid out, interconnect, and interact” (10). As much as I find the study of maps fascinating, I have realized in this class that the study of geography encompasses so much more than political boundaries. De Blij says, “[c]onsider this: a general public not exposed to a good grounding in geography can be easily confused, even mislead, as they follow the sometimes contradictory results of ongoing scientific research” (15). De Blij also says, “[t]he more we know about our planet and its fragile natural environments, about other peoples and cultures, political systems and economies, borders and boundaries, altitudes and aspirations, the better prepared we will be for the challenging times ahead” (19). I wholly agree with de Blij on this, especially as I see the ignorance people have regarding some of the major issues and conflicts facing our world today, like politics, immigration, and climate change. Personally, I have family members and friends from across the globe, and some of them are in countries where these issues are much more prominent. I think that has definitely made me more aware of what is going on in the world, and what is not being highlighted by the media. For example, I have family in Cameroon, where there are major riots going on that have to do with language rights and issues that stem from colonization. None of this is in mainstream media, even though it does have the potential to grow to a much bigger conflict.
