Gun control is defined as the "regulation of the selling, owning, and use of guns" as found on the Merriam-Webster website. Although gun control sounds like a fairly basic concept it is shrouded in controversy. Some people say guns should be outright banned while others say that every able body in America should have access to a firearm. However, there is ample evidence to prove that, taking away our second amendment right to own firearms will only hurt the American people in the long run.
Guns help save more lives than they take and help prevent more injuries than they inflict. Gun Owners of America presents an interesting statistic in which it shows that guns are used two and a half million times every year. That means that by the time you finish reading this paper approximately 25 people will have used guns to help defend themselves, and two of those people will have been women protecting themselves from sexual assault (Gun Owners of America, NA)! Although this might sound logical, it is not the case whatsoever. A Harvard study presents a shocking statistic that shows even though Russia has a very strict gun policy, their murder rate is four times as high as in "gun-ridden" America. It also states that numerous countries in Europe with very little gun control have remarkably low murder rates. This is clearly evident when comparing Germany and Luxembourg. Luxemburg has outright banned the ownership of handguns, and has also limited the ownership of other firearms to a minimal; meanwhile, Germany has a very loose gun control policy. As a result, Luxemburg's murder rate is nine times higher than Germany’s (Kates, NA)! The number of guns in relation to the number of murders is not directly related as most people
