Don’t Drink the Water by Woody Allen should be implemented in either history, english or both of them at the highschool level. There are many reason as to why Don’t Drink the Water should be in the classroom at an earlier stage than collage. First of that being the author of the piece itself. Woody Allen is considered one of the finest playwrights of his era. That era being as close as it is today speaks volumes. Another reason being the play is very easy to understand and appealing to high schoolers The third reason being that there is a lot of history tied in the words of the play. Allen has had his name in all over the news for most his life, but not all of this publicity has been good. In the 1990s Allen was seeing a women, Mia Farrow. Woody Allen and Farrow never did marry, but they were involved with each other even raising two of the many children farrow had adopted. Then Woody and Mia had a son of their own. Tragedy struck when the public learned of Allen’s affair with Farrow’s twenty one year old adopted daughter named Soon-Yi Previn. Allen has been public seen fighting for custody for the three children. He was accused of child abuse, but this was never proven in court. Nevertheless Woody lost custody of his children. He would later marry Soon-Yi Previn, making her his third wife (The first two ended in divorce). This would go to tarnish his name setting him back in the industry. He was labeled as hypocrite as many of his plays and films talked of virtue. He still released plays, but were overshadowed by this event. Don’t Drink the Water was one of his earlier works.
