I want to start with this, when was the last time you thought of how deeply privileged you are? For people like us, Australians, compared to other countries we are a lucky country as we have a high life expectancy. We have access to clean water. We have an abundance of nutritious food, and life saving medicines.

Despite this rosy picture, it is evident that we can improve on the delivering of healthcare in a range of areas making our healthcare more effective, accessible and affordable. This will ensure that families like yours will not have to make compromises when it comes to health care.

And wouldn’t you agree that if health were the most significant then why is it a struggle for some to have access to Health Care? For the record, in the World Health Report “Good health is essential to human welfare and to sustained economic and social development”. It is about time Australia becomes the epitome of the term the “lucky country”. It is about time that we all feel free to be healthy not because it cost too much, but because it is one of those free things in life.

Then again, this Medicare that we have in Australia provides us with free treatment in a public hospital and subsidized treatment for some dental services, some optometrist services. The problem here is that not all are free. It should all be free as with the rise in living expenses it has become harder for some families to pay the out of pocket expenses.

I do admit Australia has done well in its life expectancy. Keep this in mind; our life expectancy is the country’s average. Our country’s average disguises the poor life expectancy of the Indigenous population. Another variable to add to the equation is that the poorer Australians have worse health
