Disobedience Does Good “Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty. The obedient must be slaves,” famous American philosopher, Henry David Thoreau, said. Living during a time of intense reform in education, gender roles, and healthcare in the late 19th century, Thoreau recognized that the foundations of American liberty were behind the mentality of the Revolutionary War. During that time, the American colonists felt like mere slaves and this led them to take extreme measures to declare themselves independent from Britain. These beginnings make it safe to say that these United States, often considered one of the greatest modern nations, were founded upon disobedience, and instances of that mentality cover the short history of this nation. Oftentimes these instances led to relatively quick changes, therefore, it is a logical conclusion that instances of civil disobedience have positively affected this free society. Feminism has been a constant battle in history. In the Middle Ages of Europe, women had some freedoms, but once the Renaissance dawned they were confined to the house as patriarchal society strengthened. In their society, women were to remain at home and care for the household. These two ladies disobeyed this expectation, and organized the Seneca Falls Convention, where many feminists drafted the first document of modern feminism, The Declaration of Sentiments. This document parodied the Declaration of Independence but discussed the relationship between men and women as opposed to colonies and mother country (“Rights for Women”).
