The play Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare during the 16th century. The main characters, Romeo and Juliet, both face many challenges such as Romeo slaying Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, and Romeo being banished from Verona as a result. Additionally, Juliet is forced to marry the suitor, Paris, her parents selected for her when she was already secretly married to her love, Romeo. The play is a tragedy because the star-crossed lovers encounter many obstacles in the way of their love for each other which results in a dreadful and disastrous demise of both of them. Although Romeo and Juliet are ultimately responsible for their deaths, there are several minor characters who could have helped prevent their deaths, secret marriage, or meeting each other at the masquerade ball in the first place. She should not have forced the marriage of Paris and Juliet. She says to Capulet, “Ay, sir, but she will none, she gives you thanks. / I would the fool were married to her grave!” (Ⅲ.ⅴ.139-140). Lady Capulet responds to Juliet turning down the marriage by calling her a fool and wishes her dead for not obeying their decision. She should have been kinder and respected her daughter’s decision. She should have also defended Juliet when Capulet yells at her and threatened to disown her if she didn’t marry Paris. She watched as Capulet screamed at their daughter and did little to stop him. Finally, she should have had a closer relationship with her daughter, Juliet. If that were the case, Juliet may have confided in her mother rather than the Nurse, which could have possibly saved her life.
