Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer is a nonfiction novel. Into the Wild is a novel about a man named Chris McCandless who went into the wilderness and left everything in his hometown to hitchhike into different parts of America, Mexico and Canada. After he finished college he gave all his money to charity, left his car with everything in it and burned all of the things in his wallet. He wanted to find adventure in a new life. Chris McCandless died on his way to Alaska by being under prepared, he died of starvation. Chris McCandless was a man who went into the wilderness and hitchhiked to find adventure and get away from society and to start a new life, by being independent, and changing his identity. McCandless needed a car ride to go to Alaska, this shows that he allowed some people to help him. McCandless had been standing out in the snow trying to get a ride from someone ¨...the hitchhiker standing in the snow beside the road, thumb raised high, shivering in the grey Alaska dawn.¨(Krakauer 1). Although he lets people give him car rides to different places he will not allow people to give him food without putting up a fight. Jim Gallian tried to give McCandless food before going into the wilderness ¨...two grilled-cheese-and-tuna sandwiches and a bag of corn chips for lunch; he persuaded the young hitchhiker to accept the food...¨(Krakauer 7). McCandless allowed some people on the rode that he met to let them take care of him. Wayne Westerberg got close to McCandless and allowed him to sleep over at his house when it was raining ¨McCandless stayed with Westerberg for three days,riding out with his crew each morning...Before McCandless and Westerberg went their separate ways, Westerberg told the young man to look him up in Carthage if he ever needed a job.¨(Krakauer 17). He wants to have a fresh slate with his life while others don't. McCandless grew up well educated, but not in a good home. His father divorced his mother, then married another women, then got back together with his mother. This was hard on McCandless when he grew up. McCandless’s dad, Walt, has had many divorces and ruined his relationship with his son ¨...Walt continued his relationship with Marcia in secret, dividing his time between two household, two families. Lies were told and then exposed, begetting more lies to explain away the initial deceptions.¨(Krakauer 121). McCandless had a broken household when he was a child. McCandless wanted to get away and leave his parents after college, so he did. After McCandless´s graduation ceremony he packs up and leaves for an adventure ¨...He donated the balance of his bank account to OXFAM, loaded up his car, and vanished from their lives.¨(Krakauer 125). McCandless just wanted to get away from everyone, make new friends, and start a new life after college.¨I wanted movement and not a calm course of existence.
