There are many famous buildings around the world, but the Colosseum stands out to a lot of people. Some people have questions about the Colosseum, and I plan to answer a few. One question might be, who built the Colosseum and why did they pick that particular design? Another could be, what did people do in the Colosseum? The last is, why is the Colosseum a famous building today? The Colosseum is a famous building that shows the history of ancient Rome.

About two thirds of the original Colosseum is now gone. Harsh weather and vandalism are just two of the things that ruined it. Most of the damage you see today is from huge earthquakes in the years 847 AD and 1231 AD. Up until the 18th century, the amphitheater was used as a source of materials for other buildings. Also from History.com (np), there were popes who wanted to save the Colosseum because they thought of it as a site of Christian worship. They did not want a sacred place to be destroyed because of the people’s neglect. Though nobody knows if Christian figures were ever involved with the Colosseum, people took action to stop the vandalism. It has also gone through some restoration and people will always try be keep it in good shape .
The last question that I said people might have is, why is the Colosseum a famous building today? The Colosseum is the largest amphitheater ever built (Chand (np)). It also shows the personalities of the ancient Romans and what they did for fun. According to Heenan (np), it is thought that over 500,000 people and a million wild animals lost their lives in the period when the Colosseum held the human vs. beast theme. That is just one theme that the Colosseum had, there is most likely over 2 million dead
