I believe that the question as to whether or not democracy is advancing or retreating in the world today is complex to answer. There isn’t necessarily a black or white answer to this question, as democracy may be retreating within some nations, while remaining in others. However, there are complexities within the concepts of a true democracy. How one defines democracy could lead to discrepancies between answers.

To begin answer this question, I’ll address the first point that I’ve made regarding other nations and democracy. In the article “What’s Gone Wrong with Democracy”, it had been mentioned how the standards and idealization of democracy that had once been established by western nations, particularly the United States, don’t necessarily carry the same weight. Essentially, although some countries are labeled as democratic, it doesn’t instill true democratic values within the nation. I think these undemocratic values can be displayed in many countries, even in the United States, if not especially within. This doesn’t go to say that the United States secretly falls under an authoritarian regime, as I don’t believe this to be true. However, as had been mentioned in “There is no Easy Path to Democracy”, there are basic necessities in order for a democracy to properly function. Some of these necessities in certain countries are lacking, such as the backing of citizens, fair guardians, and properly functioning markets. It could also be argued that some of these necessities could be stripped under new ‘democratic’ rulers in typically considered strong democracies. Take for example Donald Trump.
