The Rewarding Roaring Twenties

Although the Roaring Twenties was filled with crime and radical behavior, it was an important era for women, African Americans, and society altogether. The Jazz Era contained the blossoming of American culture that helped shape the modern day. Without the various changes in society, culture, and politics during the 1920’s, America today would not be able to see the progressive behavior and actions of its past. Overall, the United States during the Jazz Era proved to be very beneficial due to the new social standards flappers set for women, the rebirth and contributions of African Americans, and the mistakes and lessons the government learned from their approach to the Prohibition.

Social Liberation of Women

At the start of the 1920’s, women had recently won the fight for their suffrage. However, with this new sense of freedom, the younger female generation desired more spontaneity and fun compared to the previous group of liberated women. The fun they enjoyed came in the form of being a 1920’s flapper. During the day, many women partook in conventional occupations, but when the sun went down, many transformed into the iconic flapper and enjoyed the active nightlife of the city (ushistory.org, n.d.). The nation and the world were forever changed after the introduction of flappers. Flappers broke down stereotypes for women and changed societal norms. African Americans in the Harlem Renaissance created their own voice and cultural identity that had even become a significant part in American culture. Last, the government realized their mistakes during the Prohibition which allows them to adjust promptly for modern day issues. Without the Roaring Twenties, Americans would not experience the changes and benefits it has provided
