What Makes Charlemagne Successful

The great Charlemagne was a medieval emperor who lived from 742 to 814, ruling much of western Europe from 768 all the way to his death in 814. Building the kingdom of the Franks, an early version of France, into the largest empire of medieval Europe was one of his greatest accomplishments. Whether it was considered good or not, much of western Europe was converted into christianity, unifying nations under his reign. Due to his influences and strategic planning, Charlemagne was able to stress the importance of education, government, and military tactics, proving to be a successful ruler after all. Actively promoting education and liberal arts, the importance of education was emphasized as one of Charlemagne’s main concern. Charlemagne is known to have fostered education and built schools as part of his intent to enlighten in his kingdom. It is also known that Charlemagne believed access for education should be readily made available and he “had ordered for primary schools be established in every city and monastery of his realm” (Cole and Symes 310) demonstrating his enthusiasm to promote literacy for others. Being then a Emperor, Charlemagne noticed inconsistencies between the two set of code of laws the Franks had. Realizing that defects in the legal system could be unfavorable, Charlemagne assessed that the only fix to his situation was to, “correct the errors and rewrite the laws which were ill-expressed” (Matthews and Platt 209). Charlemagne made sure to enforce a more viable form of trade, shifting the continent to a silver currency. The creation of a standardized currency resulted to the overall improvement in commerce.
