Both Gregor and Willy experience failure in their lives, and this causes their identity to become tainted. Metamorphosis presents failure by showing how Gregor fails to convince his family to understand his position, and that he is trying his best to support them. After Gregor’s transformation, his family could only think about how nasty Gregor was, and how they didn’t want to be near him. Gregor’s father can’t stand him, and will even try to kill Gregor. His mother has feelings for Gregor, but can’t stand to look at him. Grete is the only one who offers to help Gregor in some way, but even then it is very difficult for her. Later in the story, Gregor becomes somewhat comfortable with himself, however, his family hasn’t improved their attitude towards him. Gregor understands that it’s quite difficult for them to witness him in his in new form, so anytime one of them comes in the room In addition to that, Gregor doesn’t like the taste of clean, fresh food and instead prefers old, rotting food, “the fresh food, on the other hand, he didn’t like at all.” (Paragraph 40, Miller). Gregor could find rotting food easily in the outside world, giving him a constant food supply. Along with this, Gregor is causing his family to stress with him just being in the house. Leaving the house and venturing into the world would allow his family to relax just a bit, and would allow Gregor to not have to stay trapped in a room. Failure can be seen in Death of a Salesman by viewing Willy’s failure to become a successful supporter and father. In Willy’s old age he struggles to stay focused on business trips, causing him to not earn enough money for insurance and his family. Willy’s poor performance as a salesman causes him to be put on commission, “For five weeks he’s been on straight commission, like a beginner, an unknown!” (1579, Miller). Eventually, Willy get
