Spiritual Quests Many people do not believe that a teacher could help them improve their lives, but throughout Siddhartha’s life, that is proven wrong. The novel, Siddhartha by Herman Hesse, goes through Siddhartha’s spiritual journey to enlightenment. From not knowing anything about the spiritual world, to going completely into the materialistic world, back into the spiritual world. Once he is completely in the spiritual world, Siddhartha learns everything he can to get to enlightenment. Siddhartha has many teachers that help him throughout his spiritual journey, but his main teachers are Kamala, Kamaswami, and Vasudeva. “Kamasami talked to him [Siddhartha] about his business, showed him goods and warehouses and accounts. Siddhartha learned many new things; he heard much and said little” (Hesse 53). Since Siddhartha knows absolutely nothing about material things, like money and having a job in general, Kamaswami begins to teach him those things. Eventually, Siddhartha learns everything about the merchant business but realizes that he has not completely lost himself in the material world as he states, “I have learned from you how much a basket of fish costs and how much interest one can claim for lending money. That is your knowledge. But I did not learn how to think from you, my dear Kamaswami. It would be better if you learned that from me” (Hesse 56). Siddhartha realizes that he does not think the same way as many materialistic people do and begins to become more relaxed with the job. Kamaswami ends up teaching Siddhartha all about having a job and making money.
