Smoking and the Respiratory System Respiratory system is an important part of our body. It is responsible for gaseous exchange, external and internal respirations, which are some of the most important functions in our body. While it is important, the system is also really delicate. If it is exposed to many pollutants, it can lead to serious diseases or even death. Smoking is a perfect example of exposing to pollutants. Most people smoke because they think they look stylish and become addicted to it, which cause bigger health problems to their respiratory system as well as other body parts. People become addicted to smoking because of nicotine, a substance that is included in tobacco smoke along with other 7,000 chemicals. More than sixty ingredients of tobacco smoke are proved to be cancerous. Those gases are also soluble, so they can dissolve in the passage towards the alveoli or in the blood when they reach the alveoli. The tobacco smoke also contains carbon monoxide which can bind hemoglobin like oxygen does. But it can bind to hemoglobin better, so it takes the place of oxygen in hemoglobin and makes the body oxygen supply insufficient. Other chemicals include tar, hydrogen cyanide, metals and radioactive compounds which can cause cancers and interfere with the functions of respiratory system. Therefore, smoking is like harming all the body components gradually.
Smoking tobacco can cause various cancers including lungs, mouth, and other cancers, and also other various diseases. It also causes irritation and inflammation of various parts of the body including bronchi, alveoli and digestive tract. It can interfere with normal body functions and also body immunity. It can also cause asthma and chronic bronchitis especially in children from second hand smoking because second hand smoking affects the body as much as the actual smoker. Therefore, it is the best to prevent people from smoking
