“Ponch”. Some people know Ponch from the 80’s show CHiPs, however this was not the case for me. When I was a toddler, I used to get my speech mashed, creating random gibberish words that no one would understand. Not only were my words nonexistent, but I as well sounded ridiculous, every time I spoke I jabbered like Courage the Cowardly Dog trying to speak to his owner. Whenever something broke I used to say the word “ Ponch” to describe it, it took years for my parents to finally understand what “Ponch” meant. Before moving to Hesperia my parents lived with their parents for about four to five years since my birth. My grandparents are Spanish speakers and my parents speak both, English and Spanish, since I grew up in a environment mainly listening to Spanish I started to learn to speak Spanish. My parents began to think about moving to Hesperia, and since the most common language in American society is English they began to teach me to speak English. Due to the fact that I had learned most of Spanish it took me a while to speak English, this resulted in me mashing Spanish and English together, making strange words. Sometimes when I wanted something or wanted to go somewhere it was hard for my parents to understand me, or if I tried to speak in Spanish I couldn’t remember the words. One day I was playing with my toy car, then somehow I broke it. I dragged my parents over and pointed to my broken toy car and told them it was “Ponch,” but they didn’t understand what it meant.
