The Great Depression was one of the greatest worldwide economic depressions in history that occurred in the 1930s. The Great depressions began in the United States shortly after stocks plunge, however in many countries it started in 1929 and lasted into the late 1930s. It was the most widespread longest depression in history and is a great example of how the economy can fall and crash at a rapid pace. The Great Depression Started in the United States after a significant drop in prices of stock in the market. The prices began to drop around September 4,1929, and by October 29,1929, the stock market crashed leaving this day in history known as Black Tuesday (Burg 55). On this day the price of stock fell to amount that rising to a profitable …show more content…
Many of these problems go back to the mass production and World war 1 in a period where the economy was booming in the Roaring Twenties (Stresissguth 67) The Roaring Twenties left a false sense prosperity that would soon lead to high inflection a contributing factor to the depression. A major setback for the economy was World War I it was a significant burden for the United States. The war devested most of Europe and left it in economic decline with America to become the world’s banker however, Europe default on loans and bought less American products as well (Stressissguth 58). Mass production was at all time highs throughout the Roaring Twenties with factory owners enjoying the rewards while their workers struggled to make ends meet. This is when credit become popular to buy things that would be unaffordable, this led many into debt and which halted the purchasing of products, leaving warehouse full of product and the industrial production fell by 50 percent ( Stressissguth 60).The factories produced less and laid off workers, leaving workers unemployed leaving most of the perversely employed workers unable to provide the basic needs of life. Unfortunately, once the problems of the Roaring twenties arouse the economy was already on a downhill spiral for
The Great Depression was the biggest and longest lasting economic crisis in U.S history. The Great depression hit the united states on October 29, 1929 When the stock market crashed. During 1929, everyone was putting in mass amounts of their income into the stock market. For every ten dollars made, Four dollars was invested into the stock market, thats forty percent of the individual's income (American Experience).
In the 1929, the Great Depression was a worldwide depression that lasted for 10 years. The stock market crash of the 1929 caused the Depression, when loans were given out and people couldn’t repay the loan. It affected many American lives, the unemployment skyrocketed from 3% to 25%. Work wages fell 42% for those who still had a job. The Great Depression lasted so long because it affected a nation and people didn’t have money to spend to recover the economy.
1.The great depression was a time between late 1929 to 1939 and was completely ended during World War Two. It started with a series of events, most famously the Wall Street stock market crash, that induce poverty on the American citizens. It caused the downfall of the US economy.
The Great Depression was a period in United States history when business was poor and many people were out of work. The beginning of the Great Depression in the United States was associated with the stock market crash on October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday. Thousands of investors lost large amounts of money and many were wiped out, lost everything. Banks, stores, and factories were closed and left millions of Americans jobless and homeless (Baughman 82).
During 1928, the stock market continued to roar, as average price rose and trading grew; however as speculative fever grew more intense, the market began to fall apart around 1929. After the stock market crash, a period began that lasted for a full decade, from 1929 to 1939, where the nation plunged into the severest and the most prolonged economic depression in history - the Great Depression. During this inevitable period, the economy plummeted and the unemployment rate skyrocketed due to poor economic diversification, uneven distribution of wealth and poor international debt structure. The United States began a period of uninterrupted prosperity and economic expansion during the 1920s, coining the term, the roaring twenties. Automobiles and construction became the most important and excessively relied industries in the nation as a result of the assembly line and other innovations.
The first factor in the start of the Depression was the lack of diversity in the American Economy. It relied strongly on only a few basic industries, notably the construction and automobile industries. In the 1920's those 2 industries began a rapid decline: construction became scarce and fell from 11 billion to under 9 billion between 1926 and 1929. The automotive industry fell more than one third in the first nine months of 1929. Second, there was a maldistribution of purchasing power, and as a result a weakness in consumer demand. As major industries increased, the percent of profits going to consumers was to small to create adequate market for the goods the economy was producing. A third major problem was the credit structure of the economy. Farmers were greatly in debt, and crop prices were extremely low. Small banks were in trouble, many customers defaulting on their loans. Big banks were in trouble as well, many investing recklessly in the stock market then losing it all when the stock market crashed in 1929. The fourth factor was Americas position in the international trade market. In the late 20's, Europe's demand for American goods began to decline, partly because their industry was becoming more productive and partially because their economy was destabilized from the international debt structure that emerged in the aftermath of WW1. The international debt structure was a fifth and final factor contributing to the Great Depression. At the end of the war in 1918, all the European nations that had been allied with the US owed large sums of money to American banks and could not repay them with their shattered economies. The reparation payments were needed greatly from Germany and Austria, yet they were no more able to pay than the Allies were. This caused American banks to begin making large loans to European governments which they used to pay off their earlier loans, really only piling up debts. The collapse of the international credit structure in 1931 was one of the reasons the Depression spread to Europe.
In 1929 the United States had entered an economic slump known as the Great Depression. The Great Depression was the longest financial decline in American history. The sudden, devastating collapse of US stock market prices on October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday, was just the beginning of this economic decline. The Great Depression changed society, socially and economically in many ways, including: family life, crime rates, and businesses.
As early as the 1870’s, the American public started putting all their work and effort into the growth and development of only a few industries like the Automobile industry. The involvement in World War I had an immense impact on the U.S. economy. It is considered one of the main causes of the Great Depression.
Great Depression was one of the most severe economic situation the world had ever seen. It all started during late 1929 and lasted till 1939. Although, the origin of depression was United Sattes but with US Economy being highly correlated with global economy, the ill efffects were seen in the whole world with high unemployment, low production and deflation. Overall it was the most severe depression ever faced by western industrialized world. Stock Market Crashes, Bank Failures and a lot more, left the governments ineffective and this lead the global economy to what we call today- ‘’Great Depression’’.(Rockoff). As for the cause and what lead to Great Depression, the issue is still in debate among eminent economists, but the crux provides evidence that the worst ever depression ever expereinced by Global Economy stemed from multiple causes which are as follows:
It is said that the cause of the catastrophic stock market crash known as the great depression was due mostly to uncontrolled political and industrial systems otherwise known as capitalism. However, the timeline leading up to the Great Depression proves that many other factors played a role in the stock market crash that occurred in the decade of the 1930's. So lets take a look at rather four, factors contributing to the great depression that we will further discuss in the following paragraphs. Four of the main causes that led up to the great depression were unequal distribution of wealth, uncontrolled political and industrial systems, high tariffs and war debts.
The Great Depression was the longest American slump in the economy to ever occur. The Great Depression lasted for about a decade between 1929 and 1939, the dates of the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and the starting of World War II. A number of factors actually caused the Great Depression. One commonly known factor said to have caused the Great Depression is the Stock Market Crash of 1929, although this is not directly correct. The market crash was only a symptom of, as well as a transition into, the Great Depression. Other symptoms and causes includes, wealth inequality, overproduction, stock speculation, excess loaning, deflation, unemployment, and no profits.
America has been through a lot of tough spots but we are still a strong nation. We had been through so many events like the Revolutionary War, World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War. But there is this one event that hit our country the most and it’s called “The Great Depression”. There are many things that caused the Great Depression. However, there are three main things that caused the Great Depression, as in. the Stock Market Failure, Bank Failure, and Poverty.
Another issue that caused the market to drop has to do with America’s finances. In the 1920’s, stock prices were getting out of hand. Many investors were buying stocks on margin:
The Great Depression was a period of first-time decline in economic activity. It occurred between the years 1929 and 1939. It was the worst and longest economic breakdown in history. The Wall Street stock market crash started the Great Depression. It had terrible effects on the country (United States of America).
The Great Depression was the deepest and longest-lasting economic downfall in the history of the United Sates. No event has yet to rival The Great Depression to the present day today although we have had recessions in the past, and some economic panics, fears. Thankfully the United States of America has had its shares of experiences from the foundation of this country and throughout its growth many economic crises have occurred. In the United States, the Great Depression began soon after the stock market crash of October 1929, which sent Wall Street into a panic and wiped out millions of investors ("The Great Depression."). In turn from this single tragic event, numerous amounts of chain reactions occurred.
