Poe’s works are always twisted or disturbed. The endings are not always specific, which leaves it up to the reader to determine what they want to conclude about the story. In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” Roderick and Madeline Usher were both slowly but surely dying in the House of Usher. While some may argue they were dying from a disease, it is more likely a haunting or a supernatural occurrence based on some details in the story. There cannot possibly be that many coincidences in such a short span of time such as the unexplained medical condition, heightened senses, their appearance, resurrection, etc. It is evident that these so-called coincidences happening to Roderick and Madeline support the argument that they may actually be vampires based upon the …show more content…

When Madeline dies, Roderick has her coffin nailed shut and and locked in a vault made of copper and iron. This quotation explains that Madeline is resurrected and struggled but is able to push her way out of the coffin and vault. Frail little Madeline would not be able to fight her way out of that vault in the condition she is in when she is presumed dead. However, if she is infected by a vampire when she dies, she may resurrect and have the strength to battle her way out of the vault. For all of these reasons, we can tell that the Ushers are vampires. It makes complete sense that Madeline and possibly even Roderick could be vampires or infected by them in “The Fall of the House of Usher”. The medical mystery, the heightened senses, their pale and frail appearance, and Madeline’s resurrection all contribute to this explanation. We will never know if it was a disease or
